Hi fella's

is anyone shooting a 300 Norma mag with 165 to 180 gr bullets, i know the ideal bullet for reaching way out is the 215/230 gr bergers but interested in what the 165/180 gr class of hunting bullets will perform like and expected velocities, all the load data i have found is based on the 215/230 berger bullets

cheers

Ocean, I have not used the Norma version of the .300's but about very other one.. Unless you are going to do a lot of shooting passed 500 yards those bullets will work fine.. I have shot a lot of game with 150's and more with 165's.. Both excellent to 600 yards or so..

Ive been using 190 SMKs with a stout load of Retumbo for long
range hunting. It is devastating on deer size animals even
at distances beyond 1000 yds. Velocity in my gun with a 30"
barrel is above 3300 fps. No doubt other bullet brand choices
would give similar results.

cheers Yobuck, i use SMK's in smaller rifles how do you find the SMK's expand with the 190gr 30 cal. I have found they explode at high velocity impacts with varmint size bullets.

i was actually looking at the hollow point ballistic tip SGK

I had a 30-338, basically a twin. All I used was 190's BTSPs.

Greetings

180's are the only weight I've ever shot in my Norma. Rifle is a Mark X Mauser with a 24.5" barrel. Mag length limits OAL somewhat but not a problem with 180's. I get 3000 FPS with 70 grains of IMR 4831 which is a grain under book maximum.

My observations as far as the hunting performance of the various 180 grain bullets may not do much good. Deer and hogs don't pose much of a test to any 3000 FPS .30/180 and I mostly used plain jane cup and core bullets in the thing. Speer PSP's

Been meaning to try some 165's but haven't got around to it. I don't shoot this rifle much anymore. I guess old age is creeping in and I find myself enjoying 6.5x55, .260, etc. (thinking about a Creedmore) The Norma recoil does not bother me while shooting, but the bad disks in my neck let me know how they feel about it during the next few days!

They do cause considerable tissue damage if heavy bone is encountered. But that could be viewed as both good or bad depending on personal perspective. I personaly prefer recovering
dead animals as opposed to trailing wounded ones.
Especially with the real possibility of coyotes getting it anyway.
But its entirely possible there could be better options for others.
