Got my eye on a used Marlin 883ss 22 mag. It has a laminated stock. The rifle is missing it's inner ammo tube. The bolt and were the bolt rides in the receiver is very scratched up. Were they this rough from the factory? Otherwise it's in nice condition. Serial# 044989xx. Asking price is $300. I recall reading that these were good, accurate rifles. Anyone care to comment on them and/ or offer advise?

Thanks
Rob

Pass. Too many other nice .22 mag guns out there at not much more money.

I have a friend in New Hampshire who lives, to a significant degree, off the land and his primary daily carry firearm is an older version of the 883. The are good rifles, but $300 seems a bit on the high side. If you take a look at the GunBroker auctions and see what they are selling for, that should give you a ballpark idea of their value. Of course, there are regional values, where you can hardly give some firearms away in some areas, in other geographic areas there is enough demand such that the same firearm sells for a premium. I wouldn't expect that Make/Model to be hard to find.

i like the marlin bolt guns, when priced right, but $300 is too high for a beat up & incomplete gun.....

around here, they have been bringing $250-ish for a decent one that is complete & not abused.

A few months ago, I bought a NIB Marlin XT-MR for $170. I put a used Bushnell 3-9x40 on it via Weaver #12 bases and B-Square rings. It shoots the 30 grain CCI HPs that I had on-hand MOAish at 75 yards, a good solution for coons, possums, and feral cats.

I used to see bolt action Marlin 22 rifles everywhere for sale, but not much anymore I keep my eye open for one in 17HM2

I'd pass as well. I agree with your choice of a tube-fed model. So many box mags hang out so far they make a rifle hard to carry, and oogly. They can be hard to find, though.

I'd rather have the clip fed model myself. Likely to be more accurate without the tube hanging off the barrel. There have long been 4 shot magazines available for the Marlin .22 mag. bolt rifles. I have several for my old Marlin 882 and they fit very nearly flush. That rifle is the most accurate .22 mag. I've ever seen. Shoots sub 1" groups at 100 on a calm day with 3 types of ammo.

My choice may be influenced by the Model 81 that was my first rifle, long ago,and far away.

My dad has one of those 81's and has for as long as I can remember. Was the rifle my brothers and I learned to shoot with when we were kids.

Thanks for all the replies. Looking for a good, accurate 22 mag. Hoped this one might be it. Owner did drop the price but I'm going to pass. Best I can find for a mag tube is $40 plus shipping.

May be a CZ 455 combo, seems an interesting package.

Ring3: I, or I should say our family has one of these Marlin 883's in 22 Magnum (serial #64591XX) and it has a good trigger and is rather accurate.
My youngest son killed a dandy Boar Badger with it about 10+ years ago and did so with one shot head-on to the throat.
His picture with the Badger and the Rifle are among my all time favorite photos.
I like the gun its just I (we!) have quit using the 22 Magnums much at all, since the more accurate and more lethal 17 HMR came along.
I also think your Rifle should not be that expensive with those issues.
At $200.00 it might be worth dealing with the issues.
Best of luck to you if you decide to try it.

For quite some time, Marlin has included a 4-shot and a 7-shot magazine with the "clip-fed" 22 Magnums. I don't like the 7-shot magazines either and wish that Marlin would offer a 4-shot magazine for the rifles chambered in 17HM2 and 22LR.

I bought each of my kids the Marlin 981TS, tube-fed/stainless/synthetic rifles back in 2010 and they really like to shoot them, particularly with a full magazine of 22 shorts.

ring3,

You might consider a Ruger American. Mine shoots all 10 varieties of .22 Magnum I have on hand well, and some very well. Have also heard from a number of other RAR .22 Mag owners and most others also shoot well.

The RAR doesn't have a tube magazine but not many people have much against the Ruger 10/22 magazine it uses.

I picked up an 883 like new last year from a gentleman on the other side of the state. He shipped it right to my front door for $225.

Enjoy the hunt while it lasts!
