Just picked up a mini mauser action and have some questions about barreling it. Will/could a small shank Savage barrel ( 1.120 x20 tpi) be re-treaded to fit this action? Found a Lilja 20 BR low round count for a Savage small shank and was thinking about setting back/re-chamber to a 20 pratical. Any thoughts? Also have thought about doing a 223 ackley improved or 6x45 since action has small bolt face.

22x1.5 metric, IIRC.

So that's 0.87+/-, roughly a quarter inch smaller.

That would give you the thread and a 1/8" shoulder (roughly).

I got an old 222 barrel at home I can measure the current shoulder on for you.

Mine is currently a 6x45 - its da shizzle.

It's just me, but when I do a build, I much prefer to start with a fresh unfired barrel, no matter the round count of a used one. I figure if I'm going to spend all that labor and hard earned money I want fresh, not leftovers.

Can the bolt face be opened up on these to use the 308 family (.473), would the magazine be long enough for 243 or 234 AI, 257 Roberts AI? If so, I might rethink my caliber choice.

yes.

7.62x39 is a common factory offering as well as the 22-250.

magazine may prohibit anything on the 308 or x57 case.

I'd keep the bolt face at .445 and use one of the 6 PPC or variants in whatever caliber blows your skirt.

So the Lilja 20BR barrel would work with my current bolt face, just need to cut/re-thread the barrel? Guy said it shot one ragged hole at 100 yds, with only 150 rounds fired through it ( has brass/dies as well).

No, the BR is a 0.473" casehead, same as the parent .308, which traces it's roots to the 7X57 mauser. The PPC is based on the 220 Russian, which is based on the 7.62X39 which uses a .445" case head.

Shouldn't be too hard find a 6ppc take off barrel, should be a dandy deer round with 85's. Though you'd likely have the barrel will need to be contoured to drop some weight.

270: Consider the 7mm TCU. No bolt face or feed rail work necessary. 120 grain bullet @ 2600 fps. See "7mm TCU Rifle" Handloader No. 264 Feb./March 2010 pg. 60. The case capacity of a 7mm TCU case is 33 gr of water the 6.8 SPC is 35.

I used 22" a .223 light weight take off Savage barrel. It would do slightly over 1"! at 300 yards. Take off's do work.
