I wanted to get a bipod, but I really don't have any experience. So I have been reading that the Atlas is the cry once solution. What do you guys think, and when should I buy?

I have to say I'm very happy with my ATLAS and would buy another one.

I have a Harris and I can't recall having cried.

I've got several Harris and I haven't cried, either. Did look into the Atlas a few years back when Len at Longrange was running a sale. But, they were still more than I wanted to pay. Somebody has Harris on sale right now. Can't remember who. Check slickguns.

What's a good height for a bipod?

I run both Atlas and Harris. The Harris swivel is certainly adequate and better in some applications. Get the KMW Pod Lock. In the field I like the Harris 9-13 broader range of height adjustment, particularly in hilly terrain. The Atlas is lighter and has a pan feature which is nice on moving targets.

If your attaching to a Pic rail, you'll need a rail adapter for the Harris.

Depends on how you plan to use it. For shooting prone and off a bench, the 6"-9" ones work well. It also depends on your body shape, rounder people tend to need longer legs.

I've got several Harris and Atlas bipods, both are great and have their own pros and cons. In general, if it's mounting to a swivel stud I prefer the Harris S-BRM 6-9. If its going on a picatinny rail I prefer the Atlas.

I like the Larue-mount Harris bipods. Overall though despite bipods being all the rage due to PRS-type shooting, I don't find them all that useful. Usually I'd rather be in slung prone or rucksack prone.
