Mule Deer and anyone else this can offer knowledge. Let's say you've got a powder that is"way TOO slow", leaving a lot of unburned powder behind. Question: Will it's use cause excessive throat or bore erosion? Considering using it as a cast bullet load, filling the case without using/needing a filler.Used it doing some fireforming with jacketed bullets,it gave "great" accuracy, and velocities would be perfect for use of cast bullets. memtb

It's high pressure and heat that eats out a throat.
Cast bullet loads typically provide long barrel life as the cast bullet isn't as hard on a barrel and they operate at lower pressures and temperatures.
I typically don't like extra slow powders as they are more difficult to ignite and you're wasting powder, but if you're happy with the accuracy why not.

gnoahh, I have a bunch of milsurp,50 BMG,ball powder. Plan on shooting 280 grain cast bullets in a .375 AI. When doing fireforming with 270 grain Hornady SP's, gave just a ragged hole with 5 shot groups at 100 yards. Velocity was averaging just over 1800 fps. with a full case(to the bottom of the neck). I thought that it might make a good cast bullet load. I just didn't want to damage a barrel by having too much fun!! memtb

I've never seen a shot out 375 HH...so have fun trying to do that with cast bullets...
Plenty of guys use 50 cal spotter powder behind cast bullets because it used to be about $2 a pound.
Just use magnum primers and check out powder coating or paper patching and make life easy for yourself.

Boogaloo, I really never thought that I'd ever shoot the barrel out, under normal parameters. But, I was worried that with a bunch of unburned powder it may prematurely create erosion. As far as powder coating, I'm just getting started in it. If it's half as good as reported, I'll be a "happy camper"! memtb

If anything I would think the unburnt powder would protect the throat rather than erode it, but that's just a swag. Keeping the heat and pressure down is where barrel preservation is at, whether using 18-20 grs of 2400, or a case full of 50BMG powder.
