Australian sports stars urged to boycott anthem in AFL and NRL finals

HERE

Quote
Australian sports stars are being urged not to stand for the national anthem during this weekend's major rugby league and Aussie Rules finals, as a protest against racism.

The campaign was started by pop culture website Junkee, which called it a show of support for Indigenous Australians.

It has been inspired by American football player Colin Kaepernick.

The player has been refusing to stand for the US anthem before games as a protest against racial inequality.

Paul Gorrie, an Indigenous Australian activist involved in the Junkee campaign, said Kaepernick's protest made him think "why shouldn't we do that here?"

He said the Australian anthem, Advance Australia Fair, "was written in 1878 when land was still being stolen and black people were still being massacred".

It and the recent deaths of Indigenous Australians in police custody were "the impacts of our colonial history and the racism that continues to this day", he said.

"This is a call to action for ALL players to show solidarity by not singing and taking a kneel during the national anthem this weekend at the NRL and AFL grand finals."

"All players Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal should boycott the anthem and start changing Australia's ignorant mentality," he wrote.

Australian sport, in particular Aussie Rules football, has been marred by racism against indigenous players.

Adam Goodes, an Indigenous Australian who played for the Swans and has since retired, was repeatedly booed on the field and last year a rival fan was removed for allegedly telling him to "get back to the zoo".

Australia has also seen heated discussion on whether it should recognise indigenous people in its constitution, repeal clauses that prevent people of a certain race from voting and allow laws to be made based on race.

'Pretty stupid really'

The campaign has generated a mixed response.

Lance "Buddy" Franklin, one of the AFL's most high profile Aboriginal players, said there was "no chance" he would join an anthem boycott.

"First I've heard of it," Franklin said at the AFL grand final parade in Melbourne on Friday.

Personally I think it's pretty stupid really. It's the Australian national anthem, it's a part of our sport, our history."

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has described the campaign as "divisive".

"This is a weekend where everyone comes together," he told 3AW Radio.

"The two big codes, the NRL and AFL, work hard to be inclusive and embrace modern Australia and all of its diversity.

"Sport is a really wonderful inclusive institution in Australia. It divides us in the sense that we support different teams, but only in a pretty good-natured way, but above all it pulls us together. That's why we should all sing."

Staying seated

Former rugby league player Joe Williams has been one of the loudest voices backing the campaign.

Williams, who is Aboriginal, has attracted controversy before for remaining seated during the anthem, during an Australia Day ceremony recognising his community work.

"Why should we sing something that doesn't represent us?" he told the BBC.

"Would Malcolm Turnbull feel comfortable if he was made to sing God Save the Queen?"

He dismissed suggestions that the country's biggest sporting events were inappropriate venues to make a political statement.

"You're a black man until the day you die," he said.

"You're only a footballer for a short amount of time."

I guess that is all proof that the Aussies have no ability to self determine the behavior of their Citizens. All they do is 'follow the leader', no matter where that leads. laughing.

Can't Australians can't come up with an original thought?

Like no Didgeridoo playing or boycott Boomerangs, why copy Kaepernick and our flag.?

Used Guns

I wandered down to Victoria a couple of days ago and apart from thinking some really nasty thoughts at one idiot driver that didn't give way I cannot remember unduly thinking of personal safety...apart from the couple of coppers doing a speed check in Ararat and a sedan that had been rear-ended by a 4x4 in Bendigo I didn't see much of anything apart from rain and green countryside.

You are correct, next we are going to elect a gender/race confused communist so that we can import a heap of radical muslims to fundamentally change the base Australian identity.

That should top off our gay marriage and pretend blm crowd hits.

Then we can troll our worst mental institutions and find a miserable thieving lying sociopath, and give her the reins of the country after the confused one is finished scrapping everything of worth.

JSTUART - your gratitude for our exports to OZ is palpable - almost. It is regrettable that some of your top athletes seem to have caught that social disease.

From here, it often looks as though the folks and their leaders there down under are common-sensical and trying to do the right things - not always, but usually. The few times I've been in Australia and neighboring NZ almost all of the people have been simply lovely - and most seem very happy with their lives. Haven't seen a mindless protest down there - yet.

Now, I realize those are generalizations based on snapshots. Consequently, it is good to hear from an expert in-house critic like you. Helps keep things real.

That said, won't you please try to generate headlines on your good stuff and send some better social trends this direction?

Footballers aren't athletes CCCC, they are just blokes that have figured out how to get paid for playing a children's game, and good for them.

And to be honest the things that make our headlines aren't really anything like what you lot get as we don't really have the same national interests...for instance we generally (media included) think our politicians are the lowest form of scum on earth and it is the place of every breathing Australian to make them understand this.

You lot have far more interesting crime, scams, intrigue, and crooked politicians...our coppers generally limit their excess' to thinking nasty thoughts at people and being generally unpleasant, probably because they are not really allowed to shoot anyone without good reason...it annoys them but those are the rules.

We are not really over-run by lunatic foreigners despite what we think and say, drugs are a problem but I am fine with people killing themselves so long as they do it quietly where I cannot see it.

And we don't have Walmart to amuse us.

Mostly we are pretty boring.

I support Stewie on this....

The US sets certain trends and it is followed whether we want it to or not...

Having lived overseas for 3 years in my youth, I even saw it way back then.

People overseas believe what they hear from the media which is usually just copying what the American media is reporting.

Saw something not to long ago, about polls that were being done across various nation in Europe about the USA. One question was what percentage of the American Population is GAY. Many of those nations answered that over 50% of our population was gay.... that is what they perceive based on the constant news coming out of our media.

We sent trends and it is no longer positive trends. It is showing how domestically we are giving our nation over to the liberal leftists on step at a time.... day in and day out....

because "good people do nothing"......

except complain about it a lot...

You are correct, next we are going to elect a gender/race confused communist so that we can import a heap of radical muslims to fundamentally change the base Australian identity.

That should top off our gay marriage and pretend blm crowd hits.

Thanks for that.

Appoint me emperor and that would all change. Just saying'.

Electing you Emperor would be almost as silly as electing me to that position would be...the place would be fairly lonely by the time we finished.

Lonely...but polite.

Come on, i'd spare a FEW!

It isn't really a word you hear used here. About the only time one of us would use it is on one of those web forums where the word we usually do use isn't accepted wink .

FWIW the bloke fronting the foolishness which started the discussion, a boxer you'd call "has been" but for the fact he never was, has copped nothing but rubbishing and got nowhere with this. The bloke's never had an original idea in his life.

Obviously, no one was Listening to Anthony Mundine

You are correct about that Dan, he has probably been punched around the ring too many times.

Is it better to be the Yankee or the Yanker? Curious minds etc....

I suggest you take a step back and perhaps develop a different view. It is widely understood that war is a messy affair. Few consider that setting the stage for conflict between countries is simple, but fueling a revolution is a much more tawdry affair.

Quote
"I do not know whether it is to yourself or Mr. Adams I am to give my thanks for the copy of the new constitution. I beg leave through you to place them where due. It will be yet three weeks before I shall receive them from America. There are very good articles in it: and very bad. I do not know which preponderate. What we have lately read in the history of Holland, in the chapter on the Stadtholder, would have sufficed to set me against a Chief magistrate eligible for a long duration, if I had ever been disposed towards one: and what we have always read of the elections of Polish kings should have forever excluded the idea of one continuable for life. Wonderful is the effect of impudent and persevering lying. The British ministry have so long hired their gazetteers to repeat and model into every form lies about our being in anarchy, that the world has at length believed them, the English nation has believed them, the ministers themselves have come to believe them, and what is more wonderful, we have believed them ourselves. Yet where does this anarchy exist? Where did it ever exist, except in the single instance of Massachusets? And can history produce an instance of a rebellion so honourably conducted? I say nothing of it's motives. They were founded in ignorance, not wickedness. God forbid we should ever be 20. years without such a rebellion.[1] The people can not be all, and always, well informed. The part which is wrong will be discontented in proportion to the importance of the facts they misconceive. If they remain quiet under such misconceptions it is a lethargy, the forerunner of death to the public liberty. We have had 13. states independant 11. years. There has been one rebellion. That comes to one rebellion in a century and a half for each state. What country ever existed a century and a half without a rebellion? And what country can preserve it's liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants. It is it's natural manure. Our Convention has been too much impressed by the insurrection of Massachusets: and in the spur of the moment they are setting up a kite to keep the hen yard in order. I hope in god this article will be rectified before the new constitution is accepted." - Thomas Jefferson to William Stephens Smith, Paris, 13 Nov. 1787
