I'm doing some logging of some mature locust trees. At the same time I'm thinking that I need to build a pole barn to house my car and motorcycles. I bet that I could have the locust trees sawed into 6 by 6 inch pole and make myself a pole barn. Has anyone done this and do you have any pictures readily available. This will be my first time building something bigger than a bird house.

The following tools are laying around
tractor
skid steer
air compressor
hammer
levels
pto driven post hole digger

i have not but i think its a decent idea. the only issue i see is how to set them. if you set them in concrete, they'll probably rot at the ground level. i coat PT 6x6's in roofing tar below grade to slow this down.

I've built a couple of them for storage and a run-in shed for horses.

They're pretty simple, really.

They're popular around here but as a retired Carpenter/Contractor/Superintendent with 45yrs in the trade my problem is with the fact that it's just a bunch of glorified fence posts supporting a short lived structure....

Locust, set in concrete, kept dry at grade level will last a loooooong time. Hell look how long they last just drive in the ground for fence post. Unless you can hide the building, you better check state building codes. Rendell, from Filthydelphia, gave us those, and they are very biased against rough cut and native lumber. Probably ok for a shed, but better be sure.

Old tobacco barns were built with locust poles set in the ground and still stand today.

We have fence posts at our camp in Wv that still have square head nails in them . Those locust posts are still solid as can be .
