Who's hunting Colorado's 1st rifle elk season. I'm hunting in SW Colorado. Looks like it's going to be warm & dry. Good for camping but not for hunting. Good luck to all.

I'll be there!! Forecast is really looking too warm!! Combine that with a full moon, the season being a week later than normal (further from the rut?) and it may be tough hunting. I have not heard any reports on the rut. The deer forecasts based on the moon indicate it would be later this year. I hope that applies to elk too and they are still bugling during 1st rifle. They usually are where I hunt and that really makes it easier!

I'll be out there. good luck to you. agreed lots of things coming together to make for a weird 1st rifle. my bowhunting buddies reported VERY little bugling this year, and elk in much smaller "herds" than normal. I'll have a report in a couple weeks.

On the way to work this morning I saw two nice bucks with about 5 does. Seems early to be seeing them with does.

Saw two different pairs of bucks on opposite sides of the ranch both pair were hanging close with a different solitary doe. Two were really nice bucks. We'll be up for second rifle in a couple of weeks.

Forecast for Larimer County that hunt looks pretty spring like. Lows in 40s, high up to 70. No precip showing.

Deep Lake area. Probably not the best hunting but we are old men who like to camp and tell lies. We know the area, and are not that adventurous anymore. Stop by and share a glass of prune juice or geritol.

Last time I check 171 is in North Park (Routt National Forest) and Granby is in Middle Park (Arapaho National Forest)and their something like the Continental Divide that separates them. Granby is part of unit 18 which goes west about 20 miles and when I say I'll be around Granby, I forgot to mention what part I'll be around. Since first season is draw tag I'm sure someone who drew 171 appreciate your report.

NO signs of the rut going on in South Central CO during MZ season, a lot of reports of silence from around the state during archery. A few units had some activity going on, but this has been a strange year. I think the peak rut might have happened right between the end of archery and the start of rifle, but I bet you will still see some activity. It has been a very warm, dry fall all over the state.
Good luck to you gents!

Heard a little bugling on each of the last few days. About half of the cow groups have one or more small to medium sized bulls with them, but not a lot of overt rutting behavior. It's warm (68 degrees) as I sit here typing at a little over 7,000 ft elevation. Elk seem to be either up high or down pretty low but not so much in the mid elevations. Getting antsy wishing everyone good luck and good hunting!

Will be putting the outfitters tent up today and may give each stake a few extra swings. Forecast for our area is 50 mph winds on Monday. Been thru same before in it, but it does makes things interesting. Good luck to everyone, stack em up.

I went up and hung out at elk camp this past weekend with my family and friends. They had one bull and one cow down opening day and I heard more shots yesterday morning toward where they were so may have gotten more down. Bulls were bugling and chasing in the cool part of the day. I figure they'll all fill out by Wednesday if they stay vocal.

Just heard from Jeanne Horn of J Bar H Outfitters in unit 12. She says that they are having one of the best seasons ever. Warm weather is not hampering the hunt. She shows a picture on her web page of a cooler full of elk. Can't wait to get up there for the third season.

Hunted 47 with a group who's been going for 30 years. They said this was the worst season they can remember. Guy in our group missed a big 6 opening day an a 4x5 was killed in the same area. After that, nobody saw a single elk. Heard they had already moved down into their winter range.
