Truck is loaded. Starting the trek west in an hour or so. Plan to be in camp on Thursday. I think it's going to be a challenging CO 1st rifle. Week later than usual, full moon, forecast temps are well above average.... Good news is I always find them in the thick stuff, and all this only reinforces that. I think. This year I have 210 Partitions loaded up. Not fast, but probably an ideal setup for where I hunt. Good luck to all the others headed to the woods for the best week of the year!

PRM, good for you man! Looking forward to your report. The 210 Partition is my hand's down favorite .338 bullet.

Sounds awesome buddy. You shooting a 338-06? I like your positive attitude. Be safe out there and good luck!!!

Yes, 338 Fed Kimber Montana with VX-2/CDS. Pushing the 210 Partition at a rather sedate 2600. Ballistics are respectable up at 10k', which is the lowest I'll hunt.

I'm in the truck with my bud and we're just outside of Omaha, NE headed to western WY for the Saturday opener. Should arrive Thursday PM at 'the spot'.

Good luck all. And it didn't happen without pictures......

Everyone be safe on the hwys... we had icy bridges this morning and I saw a guy obviously headed hunting ruin his trip. Truck had an atv in the back, pulling a small cargo trailer. Hit an icy bridge and lost it... Went into the median and rolled the trailer, smashed the truck. Had our first snow last night.

I'm headed for NM tomorrow myself for elk with the kids... looking forward to your guys pics when I get home...

Good luck all. If you're going to be hunting on the western edge of Wyoming this weekend, PACK RAIN GEAR!

I will be up by Bondurant and yes...it is supposed to pour.

I'm good with that because it will keep lots of folks off the mountain, and I usually see more elk when weather moves in.

Had this guy at 557 yards last Saturday, but didn't feel comfortable with the shot and no way to get closer before dark. Hopefully it is a blessing in disguise as a 6x6 awaits his destiny on Friday morning!

Thanks! We have either sex tags. We were discussing options and more than casually discussed shooting a cow and going trout fishing the rest of the week. We'll see how it goes. Probably won't see an elk..... 😚

Packing up today in earnest, leaving tomorrow. The destination is North of Gunnison. The weather looks fairly tranquil for the start of the 2nd rifle season.

Tag soup for me.

Can't point to any one thing, but it was hot, very bright full moon and an orange army. Apparently someone posted coordinates as I saw 7 other hunters within an hour of first light. It was a circus. I usually see maybe one the entire trip. Pretty sure the elk were pushed out and what few remained simply laid low during the day and were active at night.

Not sure what to do next year.

Sorry to hear that... an "orange army" is my least favorite sighting on a hunt.

Thanks. Wish I knew what happened that resulted in so many other hunters in one small area all of the sudden.

On the good side, this motivates me to look into adding a WY or MT hunt next year. Start the research now and follow up with a summer scouting (camping) trip.

Chances are, all the guys you saw are saying the same thing and won't be back to that spot next year. Just a thought but I've seen it happen.

we hunted a draw unit this year, and noticed a radical increase in hunter concentration this year too.

especially frustrating was the # of guys that camped at the end of logging roads, right in the MIDDLE of good hunting areas.

I assume folks that normally hunt the other end of the unit decided to come for a visit to our end.

Billy Goat: Sounds like you could be describing the same place. I'm one who camps pretty much in the elk, but I've camped the same place for years. Lots of very thick woods and steep terrain between camp and where I go to hunt though.
