...well not "new" new as they don't make Winchester 52s any more but happened to see a "sporterized" 1939 target rifle for a reasonable price and since I had not owned one in a while let it follow me home.

Barrel has been cut to 21". Rifling looks excellent. Stock is ok but I may have a gunsmith I know change it a little... Barrel will be cut back to 16.5-18.5' and maybe threaded...

Shot it once with some bulk ammo and it did well. Trigger pull is 3 lb. 1 oz. but very crisp...

..just a sucker for .22 rifles...

Nice. Re-profile that forearm a little bit and you'll be good to go. Wish I could find one like that I could afford.

52 is one of the best in 22 LR. Great squirrel rifle

RJM, nice rifle! I have one very similar and it shoots amazing with its re contoured barrel. One note though; please check your safety on and empty chamber. apply safety and pull the trigger, be advised the rifle may fire when you move from safe to fire without your finger near the trigger. Seems to be a common Model 52 B problem.

Thanks all...and will check the safety. It is going to my smith on Friday to have the barrel cut back and threaded...

Got to shoot it today... Friend shot 10 rounds at 100 yards and got a 1.5" group for 9 of the rounds...one pull was called.

I fired three rounds at 300 and it seems to shoot well...

My friend fired two rounds at 500 and hit the bullseye dead center with one of the rounds... I have a picture on my cell phone and have to get it downloaded to Photobucket somehow...

Also found a company who will make a custom 52C Sporter stock for the heavy barrel...

Does the shephard scope allow you to adjust elevation easily to get on paper at 300 and 500?

Pretty good shooting for lobbing them out that far. Not many centerfire rifles can do that good.

Thanks...

The Shepherd has a series of drop circles that run out to 500 yards on the .22 scopes and 1000 on the centerfire ones.

Because of the amount of drop on the .22s one has to turn the power down to I think 6X to be able to see the 500 yard aiming circle.

How close the bullet strikes to the circle depends of course on what ammo one uses and how it interfaces with the rifle.

So it isn't perfect science but can work... And yesterday was almost windless...if you have any cross wind hitting things past 200 yards is very iffy...
