I setting up a .223 for my son to start shooting out to 600 yards, strictly for paper or steel. Do you find one to be more length tolerant than the other or easier to getting shooting well? I will sacrifice the slight BC drop if the hpbt tends to be more forgiving on load development.

I haven't played with the BTHP much, but the 75AM has always been easy to get shooting IME in several different rifles, as long is you can stabilize it properly.

It's worth buying a box to see for yourself.

This going to be a bolt gun or AR? In my experience the HPBT is very easy to get to shoot well and the Amax is a bit more sensitive to seating depth. Ask just about any Highpower shooter and they'll pick the HPBT for mag length loads out of an AR because they jump a long way and tolerate it well. If you single load you can get closer to the lands and play a bit more with the Amax.

Ruger predator, I plan on modifying mags to get whatever length I need.

If you can kiss lands from the magazine with the Amax then that is where I'd be.

How is the Berger at distance as far as splash? Can you spot a miss pretty good?

Always an eye opener when someone shows up with 69 grain Sierras. Them things don't kick up dirt for nothing. The light bulb really comes on when they see the 75 Amax in action.

I've never found either bullet to be temperamental. If you are going to mod the mag, I'd enjoy the better flight characteristics and terminal performance of the Amax

The 75 Amax is very accurate and perfect for 600 yds + Go 8" twist!

Would you mind sharing your load for the 75gr Amax? I have several hundred of them, a Ruger American Ranch Rifle and two AR's with 1:8 twist barrels.

I bought some of the ASC stainless steel magazines which allow for longer COAL (2.316" vs. 2.250") and the Ruger magazines will also allow max COAL of 2.265" and I would like to play with these bullets a little bit more.

I don't know if it makes a difference, but two of the rifles have Wylde chambers.

The Ruger predator will need the mag box extended to work at it's best with the amax.
The 75gr hpbt can be seated to RAR mag length and be close to the lands.

The b.c. on the 75hpbt is .395 the 75 amax is .435.

My load in the predator is 24.5gr RL=15 behind the 75 amax. with the mag mods. For 2850 fps

Without mag mods go with the 75 bthp

In ALL of my fast twist 223s, I have found that the BTHP to be more accurate than the 75 A Max.... but the 80 A Max is an accurate as the BTHP....

didn't matter if the velocity was fast or slower than max...

YMMV...

What do you have to do to modify the RAR mags? Is that just a Dremel job or something else?

Also, I corrected the COAL in my post above. The ASC mags allow a 2.316" COAL and my RAR mags will allow 2.260".

The mag mod I used was fill the end with epoxy then dremel it to length.

Was a thread on how to do it recently.

I thought there was, but my search ability must be pretty weak 'cause I couldn't find it.

Thanks for all of the info guys, as always there is a wealth of information on here.

For shooting to the 6 I'd buy 600 BTHP's and not look back.

I love the A-Max and it is a more better bullet in the wind, but I stock up on the BTHP's these days because for me they've proven more forgiving in a variety of 7, 8, and 9 twist guns.

Particularly short magazine stuff like AR's, the Howa Mini, and Ruger Americans.

You won't go wrong with either bullet, Both seem easy to get accurate loads for....

It's easy, just fill with epoxy putty then mill/Dremel/router. I made a post with pics awhile back, see link below. Since then, several people have reported good results using the same method.
