For light loads the beveled end of the friction ring goes down toward the receiver and the spring sits on top of the flat end.

The 'flat' side should go towards the receiver.
Tuning a Model 11 (or Browning) to work with light loads sometimes takes some tinkering and varies from gun to gun. Once I get the right combination of ammo, ring configuaration, and perhaps a hint of lube on the tube (or none), I dont change a thing. And that includes specific ammo type/brand.
Get the empties to fly reliably about 6-8 feet. Less than that and you might not get reliable extraction/ejection. More than that and you'll be slamming the action back.
NOTE: As I was typing mine I see other folks responded. The video and other's indicated the bevel should go towards the receiver, not the flat as I indicated. I might be wrong.
But here is something I know for sure; the condition of the recoil spring is going to have a lot to do with what works (ring configuration). If your spring is weak you might have to run the rings in the 'heavy' configuration to tune the ejection. New/replacement recoil spring changes everything.

Both sides of the ring are flat but internally one side is beveled?

Alright I think I got it. Side with the bevel went towards the receiver with thicker flat side toward the spring. If it runs it may turn into my favorite shotgun.

Nice! My local shop has a round knob Sweet Sixteen from '52 that would be here with me now if it wasn't a 30" full choke.
Every normal man must be tempted, at times, to spit on his hands, hoist the black flag, and begin slitting throats.

no steel and you might want to check the recoil stop washer wat the back of the action. It's held in place with a Rivit but can become brittle over time. It cushions the back of the receiver from the bolt during cycling. Finally always push the barrel back into the receiver a little bit when tightening the magazine cap down one the forend. This allows the forend to seat in the proper position. If you don't you can crack the forend. Great guns by the way. I have a 20 ga or maybe I should say my brother does. He borrowed it several years ago to dove hunt with and I haven't seen it since. That's ok he's a pretty good brother.

Read up on Adkins. Pretty wild. As a Texas LE I might have to grab a 12 gauge Model 31 riot gun just for the history.

a 12 gauge Model 31 riot gun Not real easy to find, and even harder to choke down the asking prices. Good luck.
