Looking at a build either 7mm mag or 300win on a weatherby vanguard s2 action. Anyone have an S2 they could weigh the stock and the barreled action with floor plate? Trying to estimate where final weight will end up. I realize these aren't featherweights but trying to be around 8.5lbs.

According to the website: http://www.weatherby.com/products/rifles/vanguard/vanguardr-stainless-synthetic.htmlthe bare rifle weighs 7 3/4 lbs. Add in your favorite rings, bases and scope from there. Looks like you'll be a bit over your weight goal.

Seen that but wondering what I could get by swapping out the stock, stock and barrel, etc.. so that's why I'm wondering about barreled action weight.

You should come close to your weight goal with a McMillan Edge stock. The improved stock adds a lot to an already very nice rifle. The calibers you are interested in are readily available so I don't know that a custom barrel would add anything to that package.

I would drop a barreled action into your stock of choice. Well made rifles......

KU, This is a S&W(Howa) bbl'd action(.300 magnum)in an early 80's Brown Precision stock. It does have blind magazine but the GS installed a steel magazine box when he extended the magazine well. Timney trigger which probably weighs about like the OEM one. So with that,a leupold 6x36 in Weaver & Leupold, and sling it goes 7lb 11oz. <8.5lb should be doable.

Excellent info guys! I just picked up a McMillan on here (non edge) and will probably just drop a barreled action it it. Might be a little over my target but we'll see.

The weight seems to be concentrated in the rear of the barrel, I have wondered if they could be turned down - not sure who would do that....take on the liability....the shanks do seem rather beefy. Not sure how much weight can be saved, someone might chime in. Guessing 4-6 oz. perhaps more.

Took my short action vanguard and slabbed the sides, recontoured the tang and recoil lug are, hollowed the bolt knob and blindboxed it, action was 2 oz lighter than a model 7 rem when finished. Sold the rifle so no pics to share, one I regret selling!! Was a 284 Win which I also extended the mag box and opened up the receiver port. Looked like a long action.
brno284
If it moves shoot it again!!
