Saw the same in my 223AI and 223 Tikka. As good as the 75 Amax was/is, the 80 Amax was/is better.

Has anyone tried these bullets in a RAR Predator, OR?

For paper and steel, the 80 VLD's are all I shoot as well. Plus I point them, which brings the BC up close to .480, tested to 1300+.

Can the 80gr Berger be loaded to AR mag length?

I think so, but it will eat a LOT of powder space. The start of the ogive may be down in the neck. You'd probably have trouble getting enough velocity out of it to make it worth while over the 75/77 grain bullets that are proven performers at mag length. I know two Highpower shooters that shoot the Sierra 77 out to 600 yards and they still do fine, but have to pay attention to the wind a bit more.

Have you looked at the ASC AR mags? They allow up to a 2.316" OAL which is ~0.060" longer than OAL for most AR mags.

Stainless steel in your choice of colors, FDE or Black, 5, 10, 20, & 30rd mags, no-tilt followers, and not expensive at all.

So buy a scheit load of the ASC mags and sell your other mags to some geek at a gun show.

I seated an Amax at 2.3" and it sure looks like the ogive is below the case mouth.

between the two, the amax hands down all day long. I've shot a couple thousand of them, maybe as many as 5000 at 2.250 also... N540 powder so my loads won't mean much to most as its not a common powder unless you are a competitor....

but 7-8 twist barrels for me, would be running 80 JLK VLDs over anything else.

Granted I"ve not shot any of the newer stuff in 10 years or so. But the JLK had it over the Berger in the wind.

Thanks for all of the first hand knowledge. I grabbed a couple boxes of each, some TAC, AR comp and have varget on the shelf. Just filled in the magazine's with epoxy and will open those up tomorrow to get away from any OAL issues.
