Seems that the ptarmigan like this one rocky pass with a tarn in southwest Colorado. I see them every time I go there in summer. Also saw a hen with about four chicks. They sure had my GWP Rica's attention.

I hunted them a lot as a kid in Alaska. They're good eating but dark meat. I like them but prefer ruffed grouse.

They are very good eating. That is a white-tailed ptarmigan, one of three species we have here in AK. Yes I know that is not an AK bird.

The most common species here is the willow ptarmigan which is the same genus and species as the red grouse of Europe...

Art, I know our blue grouse are tasty. Maybe I will get to sample these white-tailed ptarmigan this fall.

I've heard that before!

I got confused for a few seconds, since I had no idea that ptarmigan had the red color "eye shadow" smile

I have seen the red color on some of the local grouse around Fairbanks, Alaska, but not on ptarmigan. Anyway, we do have lots of Spruce and Ruffed grouse in the interior of Alaska. Spruce grouse taste somewhat similar to ptarmigan (sort to liver-like), but ruffed grouse has a white meat that is quite delicious.

You can barely see the red band above the eye on this grouse. But then, I am aways confused about the differences between ptarmigan and grouse. A friend of mine who knows about birds showed me photos of each, and pointed at the red band over the eye. He told me to look at the wing feathers during the summer, since these are different from one species to the other.
