In a lightweight package what would you pick for deer and why?

I have three 7RMs and two 270WSMs currently. There's not much difference in performance on game between the two IMO. Speeds are pretty close, so really no advantage to one over the other when it comes to hunting variety bullets. Now if one wants slippery pills, the edge goes to the 7RM due to the availability and magazine constraints.

The only down side I've run into with one of my 270WSMs(A M700) is it wouldn't feed worth a damn in bone stock form. I switched to a Wyatt CF mag & follower and life is good. OTOH my T3 270WSM feeds like butter.

My personal pick between the two is the 7RM simply due to having much more experience with the cart. Another pro is component availability for the 7.

Good luck,

loder

The caliber choice is simple.. 7RM will give you more factory ammo choices, more bullet choices, more easily found brass for reloading choices. Lightweight Package as your budget allows, Savage 110 to full-on custom.

WSM. Shorter action, lighter weight, probably more accurate. WSM brass lasts many reloads, belted cartridges tend to stretch. Pretty big medicine for deer, more of an elk choice, but I guess you guys have mule deer and long range.

I have both and love the 270WSM, it is a virtual deer hammer , the new one is in a steyr prohunter. They feed nice in any Howa action,Abolt or Sako SM action, I never had one in a T3 but they probably feed nicely as well.;

I've owned all these WSM's and belted stuff like 264WM, 270 Weatherby etc etc.

At the end of the day none of them offer anything over the 7mm Rem Mag.

A 280AI wouldn't get a second sniff.

The 280 Remington is overbore.

The 7 Rem Mag is over bore.

Just get a 30-06 in your rifle of choosing.

Of the two you mentioned, I'd probably lean towards the 7 mag.

Availability of ammo and components gives the 7 RM the edge.

If you want/need a short action, 270 WSM.

Then again, N2TRKYS has a good point, too.

I have a Win 70 Classic in 270WSM and I can't get significantly more velocity than my 270Win. I think that the 7mm Rem offers better velocity especially with heavier bullets. Add in ammo availability and bullet choices and the 7mm seems the better option. The difference between SA and LA in similarly stocked rifles won't be more than a few Ozs, assuming 24" barrels in both.

In response to the above mentioned issue of case stretch, If you fire form cases to head space on the shoulder, the 270WSM and 7mm cases should last about the same.

Yes, the 7M offers heavier bullets, but the OP said "for deer".

I have both, and like both. And performance is very similar. My take would be: go with the 270 WSM for deer and the 7 if elk were a possibility.

No difference between the two. Pick the one you like the most and have fun. Love having both of them. My Rem Mag became my Mashburn but across the board I bet I couldn't kill enough animals to tell the difference using equal bullets.

Great caliber (7mm), wrong cartridge.

7mm-08.

My brother killed a buck this year with his 7mm Rem Mag at 534 yards. The buck I killed with my 7mm-08 at 541 yards was just as dead.
