I decide to hunt squirrels this morning the Virginia Temp was 33 degree. I saw five and could only get close enough for a shot at two. They were on the ground and the dry leaves made getting close a pain in the butt. I did get a shot at two and the 410 with 3 inch 7.5 shot was all they could take. Love these cool mornings.

You know, if I'd spent the bow season chasing squirrels instead of deer I'd certainly have had more shots. I miss squirrel hunting. I'll fix that problem come January.
Sounds like a great day!

That looks like fun, is sniping them with a scoped .22 allowed?

Sounds like fun. I use either a glenfield model 60 lr with scope or a savage model 24 in .22-.410 for that. Often, i will use squirrel season as a primer for deer season. Gets me out in the woods, walking quiet, closer to mother nature and looking for active sign of deer for later on in the season.

the only real difference between a good tracker and a bad tracker, is observation. all the same data is present for both. The rest, is understanding what you're seeing.

I was getting ready for another bowhunting morning but had been seeing more squirrels and had the 410 in the truck so left the bow and took the shotgun instead.

Looks like a fun morning. I apparently have educated squirrels in my area. I take the crossbow and see squirrels if I take a 22 or shotgun I see deer.

Perhaps those tree rats are smarter than we give 'em credit for. I can have squirrels 10 ft. away when I'm sitting at the base of a large oak with either an 870 slug gun or a .30-30 (depending on the area) and a blaze orange jacket and hat during deer season. But I sit there in regular clothes with a .22 in my lap squirrel hunting and it's suddenly the "dead zone". Maybe it's because I never squirrel hunt during deer season. Just retired this year so come deer season I might devote a couple days to squirrels just to see how it goes now that I've got the luxury of a lot more hunting opportunities..... I can see it now...Sitting there with my .22 squirrel hunting and seeing a monster buck.

Now that our 'modern gun' deer season is open, I'll chase the deer and hogs until I get what the wifey wants in the freezer.
I use this time to check out the squirrels in places I don't usually squirrel hunt. I usually find a good place or two and have some good squirrel hunting later in the year.
