Our 'modern gun' deer season opens in the morning, so my son and I decided to try the squirrels, one more time. After today, it will be a while before we chase them. Need to get some deer and hogs in the freezer.

We had a good morning.

Good morning Larry.

Both of those rifles like the CCI Standard Velocity (40gr. round nose). That's what we were both shooting this morning. The Eley Club shoots exactly the same as the CCI, but cost almost twice as much per box. The only difference I can see, is that there are not as many 'flyers', with the Eley. Probably better 'quality control', I'm guessing.

We had to walk about 3/4 mile, before we even started hunting, but it was worth it.

Are the squirrels moving early yet? I don't see them until 8-9AM. I sit from first light 'til I see movement then start easing along.

It seems that the squirrels aren't moving much this year. I guess because there are lots of acorns and they just don't have to move much to feed. Like you, I saw my first squirrels around 8 am. I scared a deer, it blowed, and the squirrels were barking at it around 7:30, but I just heard them.

Got me one of those Caldwell electronic ear muffs in the mail Wednesday. Wore them yesterday in the woods. Can hear a little better with them. Heard something behind me several times I couldn't identify. About 8:20 looked to my exreme right and saw six leaves falling, knew something had shaken them loose and saw a fox squirrel up in the very top of a small oak. Knocked him out. Hunted until 10:00. Only squirrel I saw.

Didn't know deer season opened tomorrow. That will put a large dent in my squirrel hunting cause that blaze orange can be seen by them. I've had squirrels come up to me while deer hunting cause I'm not moving, even still hunting is too much movement with the orange on.

It's almost too hot to deer hunt. I will probably go in the morning, but I'll pass in the afternoon.

I've seen a few pawings that have been freshened up. Saw 2 this morning with no leaves in them and one was wet where he marked it.

Glad you got the ear muffs and hope they work out for you.

And, yep, squirrels can see the orange.

First weekend morning in the last several I did not go. They are thick in my area this year. Totaled 150 +/- a couple since early September with several days of the 12/d limit. All with a 541T, Kimber K22, and a Cooper. Been really enjoying it and have failed somewhat on preparing for deer season. Oh well, having fun and relieving some stress.

Yep, its on old 77/22. The scope is a VX2 4-12x40 AO w/ fine duplex cross hair. This is just the 2nd year I've had this scope and so far, its been flawless.

The other rifle is a 77/22 all weather w/ a Sightron SIIB 4-16x42 AO w/ dot reticle.

I'm dressed and fixing to walk out the door. Slight south wind, so I'll go to the box stand and hope to see something. I wanted to hunt another place, but the wind is wrong.

Are you going this morning?

Thanks for clearing that up.

I'm thinking about the 3-9x33 and having either the target for or the regular dot installed. I think it would be the cats meow for tree squirrels.

The all weather is my son's rifle and I've never hunted with it. I have shot at targets with it and the dot seems ok. This one has a fine duplex cross hair with a dot at the center. He really likes the dot for squirrel hunting.
