All:

My gun season starts next week hunting with another forum member here. Lets use this page to post our fall 2016 to winter 2017 kill page. I know David smoked that speed goat so hopefully he can start.

If you get something, post it up! Including small game with rimfire or shotgun ect, ect...

a 99F in 243, the 99F in 300, and maybe the 358 just for fun.

Thanks to RAS for the 358 ammo and the 99F in 243.

Posted previously as well. Sorry.

Doe #2:
The next morning, 100 yard shot, Savage 99EG in 358 Win

Our season doesn't start for another month.

I did have a decent buck in my cross hairs today, wishing it were a really big squirrel😈

My young friend Vince is a gourmet chef just getting into hunting for the meat so I took him out and showed him the ropes today. All he wanted was a meat buck so we really got lucky with a very big bodied forked horn. He shoots a Savage 110. I know I'm getting old and tired but it was all BOTH of us could do to drag this deer up out of a canyon pulling on 1-2-3. Bout killed us off! It's bigger bodied than most 4x4's I see. Thick brush, steep mountains!

He's not a 99 guy yet, but he shot the powdercated 99F .358 today and had a ball blowing up rocks at 150 yards. I have it zeroed at 50, on again at 150. At 250 it's down 10-12" but deadly accurate. Rocks don't stand a chance. grin He loved it and I could see the wheels begin spinning. He's hooked he just doesn't know it yet. I'll let him shoot a 250, that should do it.

an alien deer species to me, but from what I've read the trophies or tougher to get than Mule deer or whitetails

Looks like we could use some white meat on this post. Here's a Michigan grouse taken with a 1935 Savage Fox Sterlingworth 16 gauge.

Yup, this is his third season. He has turned into the best bird dog I've ever owned. If I could shoot as good as he points I'd be eating grouse every Sunday.

Rod,

Thanks for posting some upland game. I was hoping to see some feathers on this thread. We need to get some rabbits and waterfowl on here as well. An elk or moose would be super cool. If we are really lucky, maybe a bear.

Jeff

We are trying. We spend a lot of time camping in the summer and they have been with us hunting since they were young. Hope they continue to enjoy it. High School can be a serious distraction...
Anyway, David, you have met both of these guys a couple times over the years at the Denver collector show.

Just spit coffee all over my keyboard! smile I'm taking a 303 first week of WV. Hope it doesn't do that to my deer. Our deer are so little if it does that much damage, I'll be luck to have it's nose left, Joe.

Opening day/southern tier, after an easy winter last year yielded 3 out 4 tags filled for our group, all taken in the last half-hour of legal daylight. Here's my contribution, with my 99x270 redding.

Brother shot this 3x3 with his 99f in 358(rebore) at 15 yards. Hornady ammo.

[Linked Image]

My doe with my 99F in 300 Sav at 70 yards, 180 grain silvertip.

My last day buck at 30 yards with same setup as above. The MPI stock set up is nice for brush hunting. Wood will go on it back later.

Tooled all over a very large ranch on the back of a 4-wheeler in rain, sleet and snow all morning looking for a cow elk. My bubbaed 99G 300 may never be the same after the soaking it took. The stock is much lighter colored now. I've gotta quit hanging out with young guys. There is no way I would have done that on my own but I'm the one who has permission to hunt the ranch so I couldn't very well say, "knock yourself out buddy, I'm staying in the pickup.". David

Leave the pretty one's at home when it's raining.

Or pick yourself up a junker and powdercoat the rifle and paint the wood. wink

It's the usual old story. It wasn't raining, sleeting or snowing when we went out. But the weather forecast was for snow. It's not supposed to rain here this time of year. Shoulda known better than to take the 99G. I was leaning towards taking the Weatherby Accumark in 300 Wby and should have. It's pretty impervious to foul weather. I've got the 99G apart and I think it'll be OK. I didn't take notes on stock oils for guns of this era. If someone could post that info again I'd appreciate it. Those weatherproof 99's of yours are looking better and better Roy. The G is seriously bubbaed but is in really good shape as far as the bluing and wood condition so I hate to go that route with it. I've got a 99F 308 with a bulge just behind the front sight that is a better candidate. Going back out tomorrow so maybe I'll get lucky. Precipitation is predicted for the afternoon so I may take the Weatherby. Will post results if I get lucky. David

Nice buck Jim! Went 0-fer Monday and Tuesday in WV. Got some work done on the trailer. The trailer is so old it's ready to rust in half. The door is so out of square it wouldn't close all the way. My brother in law brought up a new storm door and we got it on. The first night it was about 30 out side and with the propane heater on high I got it almost to 60. After we got the new door on the temp went to 85 with the heater on low. Still have MD and some time in WV. All's not lost yet, Joe.

1903 at work...,

I have to admit these poor bastids were baited. They've been using our cat-door into the basement at cat-nap time...two more to go I think.

I got a doe yesterday afternoon with my 99 300 Sav. 150gr Sierra RN and 40gr of IMR 4895. Mast is scarce and the deer were hanging near fields. I only saw 4 deer in two days of hunting. No pics. I didn't even think of it since I wanted to get the doe out before dark.

No sleet or rain yesterday. Just snow. It was nice in the morning and we followed a herd of elk up to where we couldn't get to them. We got within about 400 yards of them once so I substituted a Weatherby 270 for the 99EG 308 yesterday afternoon. We saw two cows about a mile and a half away at about four o'clock. Took the 4-wheeler to within about a half mile from where we last saw them. It's rough country and they weren't visible during the ride. Had to cross a large creek to get to where we thought they were. Found a calm area with some ice on it. It looked kind of flexible when Bret crossed it. It gave way on my last step on the far shore. I only got a little wet, my other foot was on the bank. The Weatherby went in the snow on the bank and Bret pulled me and the Wby the rest of the way out. It had of course started snowing as soon as we started out on the 4-wheeler. I cleaned the snow off the scope and checked the bore for snow blockage and we were ready to go. We found the elk a few minutes later at only about 200 yards. It was snowing so hard they looked like ghosts so we let them go.
Took today off but will be back out tomorrow. David

Finished out my deer hunting here on our farm in KY this morning...used the Savage 99 in .300 Sav for a clean kill at ~100 yds. My hand load using Sierra's 150 Spitzer was a through and through just behind the fore leg. The trail up was less than 50 yds with a great blood trail. I was looking for a yearling doe to complement the buck I got last week, but settled for a large button...for a button he had good body weight. Rod

Went on a doe killin' mission this morning this morning and shot the largest whitetail buck I've ever taken. I didn't even have camo on just old clothes to clean a doe in.
A minute after I shot him a doe appears and I filled my doe tag.
First game I've taken with the Savage 99. I was using Remington 150 PSP core-lokt at about a 100 yards. The buck ran about 30' and the doe went about 25 yards.

I am now a "True Believer" in the 250/3000 cartridge. I have missed 3 deer the last two years with the little 250 cartridge, totally the fault of the nut behind the trigger. My confidence in the gun had waned yet you 250/3000 shooters here gave me the motivation to hold on to the little gem.

Saturday I killed a nice 8 point at 173 yards ( lazed afterwards) which made a 20 death run crossed a fence and just fell over. 10 minutes later I took a Doe at 183 yards and she dropped where she stood, a few ground kicks and it was over for her.

The little nifty 250 is really something special.

JeffG,

I used the Hornady .257 117 gr SST, my rifle has a 1/10 twist. The 117 gr SST chrono's at 2,660 out of my barrel using a compressed charge of H-4831sc.

The Hornady 117 gr round nose also shoots sub MOA in my rifle and to the same point of impact. I intend to use this round nose bullet in the late season.

Phil,

I actually got this 250 savage load for "Steelhead". I only use the thinner Winchester cases for loading the Hornady 117 gr SST just for the 40.0 charge of H-4831sc. The load is very compressed to the point I have to re-seat the bullets the night before hunting but no pressure issues at all.

My load using the Hornady 117 gr round nose is 39.5 of H-4831sc. This bullet is shorter than the 117 gr SST not having the compression issues. Accuracy with the 117 gr round nose is under .6 for 3 shot groups.

I will likely try the Hornady 117gr spire point BT this spring to eliminate the compressed load using the 117 gr SST.

My 250-3000 rifle has been extremely accurate with every Hornady bullet I have tried including the Hornady 100 gr which is now gone using 34.5 grs of Reloader 15. I have 300 rounds loaded with the Hornady 100 gr inter lock which will last me a while.

I am a Hornady slut....

Got a doe with the 22 HP.

Made a 100 yard shot from prone position. Was using reloads with Hornady 70gr.

Gave her the customary 20 min wait and went to look. Big splash of blood were she was standing and bits of lung told me i made a good shot.

Found her 40 yards later. Hit exactly on center of shoulder, exit was golf ball size just behind opposite shoulder.

This is a 110 pound spike I got the day before thanksgiving. The rifle is a model "E" in 308. I wanted a rifle that I could turn into my personal version of a carbine and knew it was not considered very collectible. I restocked it including a buttplate from a Ruger 44 carbine. The result is a well balanced rifle that is very maneuverable in close quarters.

Nice guys! Joel027 my 22hp is a dead ringer to yours mine was built 1917, I have a Stith & Alaskan scope setup, had 4 of them in the scope at 110 yrds, but had a strong cross wind, this evening and hoped they would come into the food plot, but they went the other way, Oh well always next year!

I wasn't going to post this because it doesn't count if you don't have photos. I shot a yearling cow elk in the head on Monday. It was so ugly I didn't take any photos. The ivories disappeared in the catastrophe. I had aimed at the neck just behind the head. I had switched to the 300 Weatherby because we hadn't been able to get close enough to the elk for the last couple weeks for any Savage 99 cartridge. The shot was at 300 plus yards. David

Ditto!

Our season just opened last weekend. Two days of hunting yielded a passel of does, nothing with horns. Back out again this Fri-Sun, if this bloody rain stops.

Nice job David. Since I don't own any magnum cartridge rifles anymore, I'd have to do that with a 99 in 284. I think it'd work fine.

Last Monday and Tuesday, in WV, saw 0 deer. This Monday saw 2 flags, and 2 small baldies at over 200 yards. Have permission to hunt one day on a friends farm. My BIL works there and has a pic on his cell of the biggest deer I have ever seen. I don't think one person could put their arms around it's neck. It's a giant fork that is way, way outside it's ears with massive brow tines. Six point or 3X3. Have to work Saturday, so that cuts into chances, Joe.

The 284 works too. I killed an elk with mine two years ago. I didn't have any ammo loaded for it so took the 300 Wby which also gives me the option of taking an elk out to 400 yards. Good luck to all you guys who haven't filled your licenses yet. David

Had a great big game season here in Montana this year. Covered lots of ground and saw a few nice mule deer but never felt the urge to trip a trigger on one. I did use one of my perch bellied 250-3000's to fill an antelope tag. He's not a big one by any means, but I was looking more for meat than anything. I was using a handloaded 87 grain Speer and a peep sight. Was able to make a clean one shot kill through the heart at 225 yards. Not bad for a 101 year old gun.

Was all pumped up to hunt my friends farm, where several respectable bucks have been hanging out, in broad daylight. Can't go tomorrow, I have to work. Woke up with the FLU. chills, muscle pain. Gonna try to rest up for side job tomorrow.

We have a late buck season January 8-10, still hope, Joe.

Tuesday I shot 4 pointer in Wis muzzleloader season with Savage ML-II muzzleloader.

Pictures may come some day, however photobucket won't let me back in without new email address and Windows 10 took over my computer mid-summer which gives me grief with pics?!?!? Figured most everything else out with W 10 except pictures and how to get them off SD cards, etc... Got all winter to figure it out.

PS: Nice UP buck! They are out there.

Just remembered to post Miss Morty's biggest buck yet. She took the

five dollar prize for big buck this year. One shot with her 99F,

300 Savage. Not a collectible gun but shortened with a recoil pad and

fits her just right.

Last Saturday I took my 99G out and harvested a nice Northwest PA whitetail. This 90 year old rifle is still putting venison on the table.

My oldest son got a WY doe antelope with the same 1961 99E 243 Win he got his doe deer with in Oct. Shot was only 150 yards but the wind was unreal today. The signs warning of extreme blow over hazard north of Laramie said gusts of 65+ mph and over by Wheatland where he got the antelope, said 55+ mph. Im guessing it was 30+ gusting to 45 when he shot; 90 deg cross wind.

After three years of not chambering a round, he gets two animals with two shots.

That is a old blind that we do not use. I shot him on a tall ridge just south of that food plot. That picture is just a beautiful shot of him with that old blind in the back ground. It would be a cool painting also.

No photo, but I got a big, fat doe at 115yds with my .300 Savage Model 99R.

Load is 150grn Hornady SST, 39.0grn IMR3031, Remington brass and Remington 9 1/2 LRP.

Got this one at 4:45pm on 12/9.

I'd also missed one earlier in the week.

I'm the one that got away. RAS almost got me, but I never crossed the fence. Who would want to shoot a little Hill Country buck like me, anyway ????

Congrats to all the ladies and men who tagged a deer this year. That buck of Coondawg's is truly great. You are gonna have to hunt a long time to top that. What a beauty.

the rumor that the 250-3000 kills all out of proportion is true. that deer never even twitched.
by the way, the front sight is covering the exit.

Savage 114 American Classic (dropping floor plate, not the ugly clip) in 270 Winchester. I was with my middle son on Nov 25 in Evart, MI. We were getting done with the morning hunt when we noticed this guy trying to give us the slip. My little guy actually spotted him. If it wasn't for the 240 yard shot, I might have let him take a poke at him. The Saturday before this one, I was with him and his brother when a dandy 10 pointer walks in front of us at about 40 yards. Anyways, I wanted my middle son to pull the trigger on him but he could never calm down enough to take a quality shot. The buck did not hang around and left before we could get it together. Anyways, here is the picture of a Michigan buck that did not get away.

Got a 4 pointer with my 22 hi power. Shot was about 80 yards out. Hit the spine and drop him. Was using reloads with Hornady bullets.
