It's a little early yet...I don't usually fire up the wood stove until mid Nov. or so...but I put a new gasket on the door yesterday and the directions said to bring the stove up to 500 degrees for a while within 24hrs to cure the glue so I fired it up this morning. It was only 38 degrees but the dogs immediately piled up in front of the stove and we stood around in front of that fire drinking coffee and warming our backsides like it was Dec....LOL I let it go a little too long and ended up opening a couple of windows and I'll be sick and tired of feeding the beast by March but that first fire of the year sure feels good...

It's not unusual to have a fire or two in July here!

It was 85 yesterday. I cant imagine needing a fire in October.

Our temps run in the mid 30's to mid 50's this time of year.
The fire was nice but it didn't take long to get to be too much.
Normally I just run a little infa-red heater for a couple of hours to take the chill off every morning but I needed to cure the glue so I fired her up....

It ain't dark in July Charlie! A bit dim at 45 - 50 deg. and rain. Warm and dry is the ticket on those days.

I was just funning ya.....hell....I saw it snow on the 4th of July when I lived in the "high desert" in NV....

One thing's for sure though....wood heat warms you to the soul no matter where you live...

We can't even have them here.

True that but as much as I hate to admit it...between my back and arthritic shoulders I had to break down and buy some wood this year...
I still scrounge up a little when ever I see a nice log that's drifted down the river and hung up in a spot where I can get to it but my days of going to the woods are about over with...

Up until this year I'd spend Sept. Grouse hunting in the mornings and cutting wood in the afternoon. I always looked forward to it but I have to admit standing there watching em kick a couple cords off the truck about three feet from my wood shed was kind of nice....grin
Besides....now I can Grouse hunt all day (when my back lets me)...

Charlie, it really is tough too beat a wood stove for heat.


We've been out in the hills for the last few days moving cows and while we're there stay in an old log house.

It has a pretty old halfway wore out Monarch in the kitchen and of course we fire it up every fall.

We'll bring a chainsaw and scrounge broken corral rails and posts for camp wood.

This year the chopping block was getting pretty soft in the center so I climbed up on a REALLY old dozed up pile of cabin remains and cut a new block out of an old cedar log.

Wood was still nice and solid so I cut another chunk off and we split it. Smelled and looked great and burned like a hot sonuvabitch!

We have been in our new place for about a month and have been figuring out wood heat since I haven't had a wood stove since childhood. Turning on the furnace circulation fan we're able to get the whole house comfortable. Our first electric bill just came in and it looks like the stove will pay for itself. It is definitely work to feed it but it makes for good family time working on wood gathering.

Well aware of that expression, Barry, But it seems to me it a few more warmings than that.

By the time it's cut, loaded in the truck, unloaded at home, cut to length, split, stacked, hauled inside, and then burned....I need AC!

I use a ceiling fan when the electricity is working.....

I'm only heating about 700 Sq. Ft. so I get by with just the fan in my stove but yea...a ceiling fan's the way to go if you need to move a lot of air....

When I was kid, we lived in a house with 3 fireplaces, and my dad was pyromaniac. If it got below 70 degrees, he'd build fires.

Hell I was 18 years old before I knew my name wasn't Get Wood!

There wasn't any of that easy chainsaw work either... He never got a chainsaw til I left home. Double bitted axe.

Ceiling fan works great for the living room but doesn't seem to push air down the hallway. If we leave it off the heat stays high and the cold air return is 10' from the ceiling fan. I can get 75 degree air coming out of the vents in the bedrooms. I don't mind sleeping cool but the little kids don't get using blankets yet 😁

That would be considered child abuse these days....
There's nothing like hard to take the mischief out of a young boy though. Most of today's youth could stand a good dose.
In my case it was a shovel, I swear my old man stayed awake nights thinking up jobs for me that involved a dam shovel.

Makes me wish I was at my place up there. I put in a new stove two years ago (replacing an old Fisher) and never lit it. I got up there this summer and for a couple of days it was cool enough to light it. It did its job and darn it felt and looked great.

Nothing wrong with an old Monarch. This one still cooks cackle berries, sausage and hash browns well.

What'd you swap out the Fisher for? Which model did you have?

Misread your question. It was a Mama Bear.

Knew quite a few people that had Fisher 'Bear' stoves when I lived in Fbx. Great stoves. So are the Jotul. Another friend still has the 'teepee' shaped Jotul. I had the same in a house I sold.

Nothing like curling up in front of a good fire when the mercury drops.

I don't know how I let that Cur Dog get so fat but I've had her on a serious diet.

She looks and feels better much better now.

Took out a propane fireplace and replaced it with this. One of the best things we have ever done.

It's a blowtorch isn't it? My wife complains about the sound of the fan when she's sitting next to it so we don't get full heat output from it. But that's not a bad thing, as it almost puts out too much heat unless you throttle it way back.

The fan is a bit loud but I am half deaf anyways so the tv is turned up so loud I can't hear the fan. lol

The house really wasn't designed for this large of output in the living room. It will plum run you out quick ,fast and in a hurry. I have been sitting on the couch and thought, man it is warm in here and looked over at the stat and it was almost 90*. Of course the Wife is warm and toasty which is all the that matters anyway. We do have a large overhead fan that does help push out the air somewhat but the north end of the house where the bedrooms are gets a little cool in the winter. I am trying to come up with a plan that allows a thermostat down the hall. I asked about moving the main thermostat but since it is over the main return, I have been advised not to move it.

I also thought about just turning on the fan and letting the air circulate which sounded good in theory but in practical application, all it did was blow cold air on me when I was in bed. Oh well, back to the drawing board.

I don't mind the fan when it's throttled back, really isn't that loud unless you're sitting right next to the fireplace. Our 1st and 2nd floors are 2500 sq ft with the fireplace in a 2 story living room with a ceiling fan. You really have to keep the ceiling fan cranking or the upstairs hallway is roasting and better keep the upstairs bedroom doors open or the bedrooms get cold.

I wish there was a way to run our forced air heat in a fan only mode just to circulate the hot air from the fireplace.

I heat with wood all winter, I start bringing in the next years firewood About March! anytime i see a log or tree I can get easy I get it! My goal is to be done by Oct. 1st Bow season, but Ill cut wood anytime I can get it! about 2 tanks of gas is it for me for a day on a Good day!

Seems you aught to be able to engineer that. Different switch/T-stat?

I thought about another stat down my hallway where it gets cooler in parallel with the original one that I can switch back and forth depending on time of year.

I work hard to keep two woodstoves and a fireplace going.

That is a piece of equipment I would love to have help me clear 80ac of cedar trees.

I have machine envy.

I don't drag my wood thru the mud. I carry it......grin

Well, there was this flash flood last May....

I love wood heat. I have an EKO 25. It is a bit different. It's a gasifier. It burns very efficiently. I go through about 4 cords a year to heat the house and hot water all winter.

Stove is a Quadra-Fire. Burns very efficiently, only about 6 logs a night from 7 -7 or so once a good bed of coals established. Burns down to a very fine ash. Only drawback, it still gets air even with the dampers shut. It's designed that way it seems for air quality purposes. If I sleep more than 5-6 hours the coals are about gone.

Ceiling fan has been running since November. Gotta keep the heat down from the 10' ceilings.

I do enough engineering stuff during the day, just want to sit by the fire and sip a brew or a finger or two of bourbon.

Actually I think the t-stat has a fan only mode.

We used to run a 4" vent line under the floor from farthest place in the house, to a vent near the stove would help to move heated air to the back of the house .
