Any suggestions for a nosler bullet? I have imr4198, 4895 surplus, and imr3031. For a marlin 1895 rifle.

4198 and 3031 are classics in the .45-70, 4895 works, too. I really like the 250 TSX with max load of Vv 120, like them better than C&C 300's. It blows big holes, kills stuff with authority. http://www.barnesbullets.com/files/2014/11/45-70Marlin1895Web.pdfDF

48.5grs IMR-4198 and the 300gr Speer works wonders out of my 1895G.

Hornadys do expand rather readily if started above 1900 fps and targets are close.
I prefer the Speer Unicor/Plinker, never have used the Nosler but have heard good things about it.
If none of the other powders work out, try some H322.

I have used the Nosler 300 grain .458 Protected Point with good results in my .45-90. Winchester loaded this bullet in their Supreme .45-70 ammo and that shot well in my .45-90 also. The Winchester published velocity was 1800+ fps and it is devastating at that velocity. If you push the bullet above 2200 fps impact velocity it will expand too rapidly. Some loading buddies of mine loaded it to 2600 in my 45-90 and shot some dead goats and the result was messy; way too hot.
My preferred powder is N133, but there are many powders that will do a good job.

Between this load and 50.0 grains, you should find some magic. (And that's the area where Sierra's accuracy load falls as well.)

Sounds like 4198 it is. Will get started this evening on that! Thank you Gentlemen, truly appreciated.

If none of the other powders work out, try some H322. Those Hornandy bullets were the old jacketed hollow point model, I don't know if they even make them anymore. I used 4198, a lot of it.

They still make a jacketed hollowpoint, I use them in my .458 SOCOM. I don't know if they are the same as what you used, though.
I used a lot of IMR4198, also. About 55 grains. They really mushed shoulder meat up at that speed!
But, they were accurate, and had a trajectory very similar to my .30-30. Just kicked 3 times as hard....
I run the Speers in the mid-1700s now, and if I can't find any when I need to buy more, I'll use the Hornadys, I don't have any problem with them at that speed.

That does say 150 yards, doesn't it? Yes it does. It also says 16 years ago (which was before my eyesight had begun to 'benefit' from experience .....when I was still shooting with open/iron sights). BUt I decided to drop a scope on my 45-70, a 3-9 Leupold compact I believe it was (on 9X), just to see what that rifle was capable of. The day was a typical brisk fall day with a fresh 'breeze' coming off the ocean when I threw a sandbag across a driftwood log and proceed to see what my rifle could do. (It was a Ruger #1 also, but my Guide Gun seems to approve of similar loads.)
