I picked up a 1899 model FL take down made in 1924. It is a 20 in barrel, straight stock in 22 high power. The very front of the barrel is threaded and has a nicely made thread protector on it. This is directly in front of the integral base front site. Does anyone have any idea what this was intended for? Any chance this was a factory modification? I have never seen this before. Whoever did this made a very professional effort. Thank you. Mike

It's threaded for a suppressor. Don't know about the factory angle.

Jeff and Steve, Thanks for the replies. I was not aware of the Maxim. Thank you for the pic Jeff. That is exactly what I have, with the exception of the suppressor. Now all I need to do is find a legal one for sale! I wont hold my breath. Thanks again for the help. Mike

Maxim silencers were the grandaddy of them all. (I know, suppressors is the correct terminology, but for like a hundred years they were called silencers by one and all.)

Not sure but unless the Maxim silencer had a tax stamp with it I don't think it is possible to own it legally.
Maxim threads were 20/inch which is courser than what is common now.
As a note: "I picked up a 1899 model FL take down made in 1924." I think you have a 99-F not an 1899-FL.

Rick, The receiver ring is stamped Savage 1899 MODFL And the serial number is 269XXX. All numbers match, receiver, butt and forearm. So I used what is on the rifle to describe it. I too, using the Royal book as a guide would have thought it to be a 99F. But the stamping says otherwise. Who knows? Mike

I think that is 1899 MODEL, and the E was a light stamp. The rifles weren't stamped with a model designation, Joe.
I'm not greedy, I just want one of each.

The 1920's rifles were often stamped with a Model 1899 stamp but in their literature they were almost always called 99's after 1921. In practice we refer to them as 99's to avoid massive confusion.
“ The Savage 99 Pocket Reference”. All models and variations of 1895’s, 1899’s and 99’s covered. Also dates, checkering, engraving.. Find at www.savagelevers.com

Pull the forearm off and see if there is a letter stamped on the front of the receiver. The 99F is the straight gripped uncheckered takedown. David
