Hey all ...I don't know much about pre-64 model 70's. A coworker of mine found one he is interested in. The ad says its a 1949 transition model in 270. It says they are called a transition model due to the style of the tand and safety. Are they worth more because of that? It looks to be pretty nice condition in the pictures.Asking price is $1,000.00. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Don

Price is always dependent on originality.. No way for us to know how original it is based on your post.. If my photobucket worked, I'd show you pictures of a 1949 that would knock your socks off, but still only brought $850.00 in auction... wink

I'll see if I can figure out how to move the pictures to photobucket and put them up.

I would guess, based on the rather poor picture, that it has been refinished, The "texture" of the stock doesn't look original.
Can't see if the stock has been cut, and recoil pad added, as that area has conveniently been cropped out?
Not enough detail to tell much else.
Either of those takes it from collector to shooter. As a shooter, I see $850.

I'd ask for more pictures. Need to know if the butt plate has been changed or if it has any extra holes drilled in receiver...

Be very careful of buying on Arms List! A lot of scammers on that site. Four rifles I sold 2-3 years ago have showed up on that site for sale. If he doesn't respond to requests for more info, move on.

Pay attention to what prewwar375 just told you. It is very good information.

If you cannot do a face to face transaction on this rifle, at least insinuate you can do it in correspondence with the selling individual and see if they disappear.

I really like the transition model 70 just based on some of their quirky features. And while they are more scarce, simply based on the limited years of production, they don't generally fetch a different price than a "post-war" model 70 (all other things being equal). I believe the scarcity of the transition rifles is offset by the fact some people don't like them, meaning the demand isn't quite the same as for rifles that don't have the transition features.
