A few times each year I end up having to drive a few hours to stay a day or two. I've found a couple nice spots for some LR shooting which is wonderful as where I live isn't exactly a hotbed for LR spots. I run a 7RM, 338RUM, and AR50 for the long stuff, and a 280, 708, 6.5x47, 6.5x284, and 308 for the mid range stuff. Its fun to bring less experienced people out, tell them how many MOA to dial the turret to and watch the huge grin on their face when the shot lands. 2L soda bottles are some of my favorite reactive targets for LR.

The first is on the West side of WA, middle of nowhere. The rock face is 1600 yards. We were just picking out certain rocks as targets as driving to set out steel was not possible.

The second is on the East side of WA, even more in the middle of nowhere. I think I could get to a mile to the top of the hill, but I had steel and a couple of 2L soda bottles at 1200 and 1400.

Just thought I'd share. (I have no idea why the pics are sideways??? Sorry)

Based on the photos, that looks like very, very steep country.

I like it! This is why I live in NM for the same reason, lots of public open space!

Hunting1, I didn't shoot long range when I lived in NM but I've often thought since how easy it'd be to find spots! Unless things have changed anyway. Just get out in the creosote and mesquite and start shooting rocks.

Where I am now, western Oregon, clearcuts are the name of the game, and finding one that a) isn't Weyerhouser land (they are dicks) and b) has some sort of reasonable access to where the targets are is the hard part. Especially the latter. Anyway here's my current spot. Plates hung at 500, 600, 875, and 910 yards. I had to hike them in. Last time I was there, last week, it was dead calm...

I can only stretch it to about 3 miles in this spot.... too bad I don't have a "baby .270 with 47 Mils on the erector and 10 more on the windshield".... then I could make full use of it...

My range has a 1,000-yard range, but there is an area where someone put out steel to a 1,000 and you can shoot rocks even further.

I was hooked the first time going out and seeing how easy it was with good gear.

Plenty of prairie dog targets too!

I hear ya.

I've only got 100 MOA of erector and 20 more on the windshield. Minus the losses I "suffer" by not shimming my base I can only get to ~2100.

It's cost me a lot of trophy animals.

(What scope are you running there?)
