I have been working up hunting loads for a Marlin 336-A and finally the rifle shot it's best group at the range today with 31.0 of 3031 and the 170 gr Speer.

Any experience with this bullet in the 30-30? Is this bullet to tough at 30-30 velocity's ??

Never used them in my 30 30, but in my rechambered Marlin 307W at about 2400fps they are accurate and deadly on Whitetails .

It's hard to find a bad bullet at 2100 fps and the Speer will work just fine for anything a 30-30 does.

I've killed about 9 or 10 whitetail with the 170 gr. Speer from my old .30-30 Marlin. It's by far been the most accurate bullet for my rifle turning in honest five shot groups of 1 1/4" at 100 yards benched. It's not a super tough bullet, it expands very readily and does a lot of damage inside. I've gotten exits with good holes on broadside shots. I did shoot one average size doe for here (110 pounds field dressed) at a strong angle head on inside the slightly on shoulder in which the bullet exited back of the opposite side rib cage in three different pieces. I took a youth hunter with me on a hunt and he shot a similar size doe with the rifle and Speer 170. A group of five does were feeding in the timber of the national forest up a spur ridge toward us at last light. They were at an angle that would take them on the off side of the ridge so I told the kid to shoot if he felt he could make a good shot. Range was about 80 yards and the shot plunked at the back of the rib cage hitting the liver and traveled back into the opposite side hip joint. It broke the deer down and we closed the distance and finished it off. Made for a messy field dressing job. Hope this helps?

I shot 130 gr Speer SP in a 270 for decades, they maybe a little softer that some other bullets, but I would expect that for shooting Deer at woods ranges or a bit more will not be a major issue! I have a friend that shoots a 30-30 single shot and its his bullet of choice, and he hunts deer all over New England with it, one of the H+R handi rifles with a 1.5-5x Leupold on it! He has kill some pretty big Maine and NH bucks with it! Says its light short and little recoil and golf ball accurate!

Bullets for the .30-30 have been so refined for so long that it's hard to find one that wouldn't work. Speer, Sierra, Corelokt, Winchester, etc all work pretty well.

Have killed a number of deer with the 170. My favorite shot, off hand, was a cotton tail rabbit at 80 yards, head shot.

I get phenomenal accuracy our of my 336 SC (made in 1950) with the Speer 170 and 32.0gr of WW-748. This gives about 2000fps. 34.0gr gives a little over 2100 fps and the groups open up to about 1 1/2", but this is using an aperture sight (Williams FP).

This statement is very true! All I look for is who's is the most accurate, and go from there. And, to be honest, I use my .30-30 at ranges that accuracy is not a real consideration. It's just *me* to see which one is the most accurate.

My M94 just happens to like Hornady 170 FPs, but I don't feel that bullet has an inherent superiority to any other .30-30 bullet when it comes to terminal performance.

Doc; I've used the 170 Speer and the 170 Hornady on deer up to 178 lbs, and on hogs up to 260 lbs. However, on a "TROPHY QUEST" series some time ago, the .30-30 with 170gr bullet (not clear on make) was used to take a Bison out west over 1000 lbs..... Seems like it would be satisfactory for anything you'd care to hunt.
Just my $.02.

WILL.

I killed another doe with my old Marlin and the 170 gr. Speer last Sunday morning. Easy peasy... shot behind the shoulder from about eighty yards as she walked through the timber the 110 lb. doe ran about 60 yards and piled up. Had a good exit with about 3/4" - 1" hole and an easy blood trail full of bubbly blood.

Is been great for deer. Good accuracy in both Marlin and Winchester.

The family and I have used them for years in 30-30, 300 Savage, 308 Win and 30-06. Good bullet, accurate and inexpensive. Keep them steamed up at 2000-2500fps and go collect your venison. Don't try to push them to much past 2500fps or so. Deer(both kinds), Elk, and hogs have all fallen rather neatly to us.
You're gonna like them. The Speer 150's and 130's are the same bullet, shortened. They make for better deer bullets in my opinion in 30-30. You can't go wrong with any of them.
Have fun and good luck!
Thanks, Tom
