I picked one of these up in a trade. Its is currently a 300 RSAUM.......thinking about a couple of ways to go..........dumping the bolt and getting a new PTG standard bolt and building a 308 off it or maybe leaving it as a 300 RSAUM and twisting a new barrel on and restocking and going that route........not interested in going with anything but a 30 cal bore for the gun. I have dialed back what I have to 223 and 308, but did get 3 boxes of 300 RSAUM ammo with the trade.............so what say you guys?

Have you shot it like it is? I have a Model 7 in 300 SAUM that shoots really well. All I did was a trigger job and stock change. From 120's to 180's it seems to like them all.

or a .450 Marlin maybe? haven't looked at COAL issues on that one though. Kimber and M70 WSMs have a little more mag length. below is a .350 RM that'll fit a M7, and a .358WSM that will fit a M70 WSM action.

and my .358WSM

but that won't help the OP if he's stuck on .30, which he already has...

This. You have a 30 cal mag and only interested in a 30 cal mag. What's wrong with it?

the previous owner was shall we say less then diligent in their care of the gun. The bore looks ok, but I have not shot it yet. It has some pitting on the outside of the barrel near the muzzle and the crown looks kinda rough. I also have to get a broken screw out of the base holes on the gun. it has a few warts, but trying to decide do I really need a 300 RSAUM or would another 308 be a better option.

I've got a Model Seven in 7 SAUM. I couldn't imagine not like a 300 SAUM.

Keep it as a SAUM. Heck, neck it down to a 6.5 SAUM.

Stainless RSAUM and WSM Remington 700 barrels can often be found on eBay for less than $100.

Bingo.....

I've had good luck with all SS Remington SAUM barrels I've shot. Some where surprisingly good.

I turned my 300 SAUM into a 350 Rem mag but I would also seriously consider a 6.5 Rem Mag or 7 SAUM if I did it again. The 350 is hampered by the short mag box though the 200 TSX is all I need.

It's all ready to hunt such as it is!

Besides the Rem 7 is just a entry level, no good safety, no control round feeding. Don't 'build' on that primitive.

Skip the 'build' words and then trade it once you learn to appreciate fine rifles.

Ugh.... Don........ sick

A M7 with a mag boltface could be all kinds of fun things. The main limitation is COAL and there's not much to be done about it unless you go with a DBM setup. But that's a stiff little action with great potential. Since you have ammo for it, I'd at least try it, since you are stuck on a .30 and all.

If you buy a PTG .308 boltface bolt for it I might be interested in that magnum bolt...

A guy told me about his 6.5 SAUM M7 with a detachable mag setup that gave over 3" COAL. I about peed my pants <g>. That'd be a cool rifle.

That's just about as dumbdumb as your premise that the 257Roberts isn't an effective deer round.

Build a 6.5 WSM. Saum is hard to find brass and it's a pain to make. Personally I would sell it and look for a model 700 short action, magnum bolt face. So many more options for a 700...

There's 6.5 SAUM brass available from GAP. They call it 6.5 GAP 4S.

Agree that there's WAY more options with a SA M700, including easy-to-get longer COAL, via milling for an extended box. That extra length can be a godsend with the WSM or SAUM.
