My son got his first deer on Wednesday. Small spike, but he was tickled. 45 yards. Ruger 77/357 with 125 gr JSP. left a quarter sized exit hole.

The smile on that young man's face is worth a mint! Congratulations to the both of you. Out of curiosity, how far did he go after being hit?

Excellent! Always love seeing these "first deer" smiles... a memory that will last a lifetime. Thanks for sharing the picture. He will shoot bigger, but will always remember that special buck right there. Congratulations to both of you and best wishes for many more memorable hunts together.

He jumped straight up and ran a 50 yard semicircle and plowed into a cedar and dropped right there.

My nephews have used a .357 lever action with hollow point 125 gr. Its a killer for sure, but they have never gotten an exit wound. I went with JSP for some expansion and better penetration. I got it. I was very happy with the results. I'm going to pick up a 77/357 for me this weekend. I think I will use 158 gr JSP in mine.

Very cool!

If I shot a buck like that as a kid, I would have considered myself the worlds greatest hunter!

Congrats to him!

No reloading.....yet. Just off the shelf Fiocchi ammo. I have some Remington too, but it seems hotter and has a different POI, so I stuck with what we had the most of. I'm wanting to start reloading so I can cook up my own load. Just bought one of these rifles for me too, so I need to start reloading.

Ok. I load for 3 357 handguns and an 1894 Marlin. The Marlin is just to much fun but havn't shot anything with it yet and when I do doubt shots will be longer than 50 yds. Pigs first. grin

1894 Marlin is what my nephew uses. He's killed two nice deer. Never over 75 yards, but it did a good job. Hard to beat a nice lever action.
