I ordered a 5" smith & wesson in 460 today, you can shoot 45 colt, 454 casull, or S&W 460 through it. 45 colt for practice, that a easy one.
But for carrying when hiking or bow hunting 454 or 460? I dont have any experience with ether. Looking at the reloading manuals the 460 case is longer but the powders used are a little slower so both cartridges push 300 Gr. bullets about the same speed. So I'm thinking the 454 might get higher velocity out of the 5" bbled revolver I ordered( faster powder/ short bbl). I've got a couple of other guns to work up loads for and work
will get in the way so I wont get to do and comparisons at the range for a while.

I'd go with 395 grain hard cast wide flatpoint ( Cast Performance Bullet Co.)in the 460. They shot well for me,now I'll be using my own cast 400's,similar to the Cast Performance. But, that's just me!!! It's my preferred bullet in my 8 3/8" for everything, except plinking. memtb

Umm, no. They're only going to run the same speed if the 460 is downloaded. Some of the manuals do show downloaded 460 data, especially lead bullet loads.

Regardless of barrel length, 454 is not going to give you higher velocity unless it's loaded hotter. It's a shorter case, and both can be loaded to the same pressure, obviously less capacity = slower. There is no advantage to using the shorter 454 case in these guns, other than just ammo availability.

If you're loading your own, just use 460 brass and load it to whatever power level you want. That's a much better system than using brass that's too short for the chamber, making the bullet jump across a gap before entering the throat.

Just a word of advice - don't shoot factory 45 Colt lead bullet cowboy loads in your 460 unless you want to spend a bunch of time cleaning the cylinder before shooting 460 again. You can expect significant lead/fouling buildup in the front of the chamber.

I have yet to meet a .460 that shoots .45 Colt and .454 Casull well. Too much of a jump. The .460 has a 1.8-inch long case. I would suggest loading the .460 down if lower velocities are desired. It's not a terribly efficient cartridge. It will push heavy and light bullets to good velocities, but with mid-range bullet weights, it doesn't run away from the .454 by a whole lot, especially if you load the .454 to spec. Personally, if you are not planning on long shots on game (and you probably aren't judging by the choice of a 5-inch version), you would probably be better served with a smaller revolver in .454 or .45 Colt.

It won't take long for you to start looking for a good load in the hot 45 Colt category. The 454 can be pretty obnoxious and the 460 is just too much fun for me.

And virtually any and every .45 Colt will be easier to pack and carry.

The thing with throttling down large cases, you typically don't get the accuracy you will with a smaller case run at the same level.

I can get the 460 as a long barreled scoped revolver for long range work, for a short barreled open sight revolver not so much.

The 460 case is great for shot shells though!

I wanted this revolver to carry in the woods when I'm not caring a rifle, I don't intend to hunt with it. I'll load it with heavy 460s for packing but most of the time I'll shoot jacketed 45 colt out of it.
Yondering; thanks for the advise about not shooting lead 45 colt though this gun.

Thanks

However, getting your bullet from a 1.28-inch case to make the jump to the forcing cone is an even worse recipe for accuracy in my humble opinion. That X-frame doesn't kick a whole lot even with heavy loads, the one exception to that rule in my experience being the CorBon 395 grain load that is a bit "snappy" (that's a technical term).

He was talking about cowboy action-type loads. If the gun is to serve as a backup weapon, you could get something a lot lighter and easier to pack -- unless you've already bought it. Unless you intend to throttle it up as it was intended, the X-frame makes for a lousy .45 Colt of .454 Casull.

Now, if you simply like X-frames, knock yourself out and don't let anyone discourage you.

glad to help, just sharing from experience. My 460 came with a bunch of ammo, including a couple boxes of 45 Colt lead cowboy loads; a couple cylinders of those and the subsequent cleaning was all it took to realize that isn't worth it. They didn't shoot to point of aim anyway, even up close, so no big loss.

Thank you
I'll print that out and tack it to the peg board above my reloading bench

Based on your intended use, I would recommend another bullet than the 300 grain XTP.

Something along the lines of a 400 grain hard cast.

Yeah, well, you know, that's just, like, your opinion, man.

My experience is pretty limited when it comes to loading hard cast bullets. Wouldn't I have to use gas checks with cast bullets? Would leading be a concern with cast bullets in a 460? I cast 230 gr. round nose ( 97% lead, 2% antimony, 1% tin) for my 45 acp, they work well for bowling pins and steel matches I shoot without leading up the bbl.
I'd love to cast heavy bullets for this 460.

The answer to what you need to do to prevent leading with cast bullets is not a simple answer, but rather an it depends answer.

If your revolver is cast friendly which is to say the cylinder throats are 0.0015"-0.002" over bore dia, and your bullets are sized 0.001" over bore diameter you can drive plain based cast bullets fairly fast without leading, also providing you are using a good lube. But it's not a simple issue of velocity, it's also related to pressure, how hard the lead is and the barrel twist rate.

I've run plain based cast bullets ~18 bhn 1200-1500 fps in revolvers loaded at 30-40,000 psi and had no appreciable leading and outstanding accuracy.

Fire hire pressures I would say a gas check is a necessity. And a gas check never hurts anything other than the added cost and effort to install them.

On the flip side if you have a hard cast bullet that is at or under bore size and is lubed with one of those hard crayon type lubes many commercial casters use, you can experience the most hellacious leading ever. So hard cast is no magic solution for magnum revolvers, and can be detrimental.

Jamie, The bullets that I recommended come already checked, with a lube that works good at higher velocities. I'm "pushing" mine pretty hard, with no evidence of leading. If the firearm is to be used for stopping a bear, most folks suggest a heavy, hard cast, wide metplat (bullet tip almost full caliber). You can do We'll with a heavy load in a 45 LC, as well as the 454. If you have the 460, enjoy it. As a handloader, you can down load it to squib loads, or "Rock your world" loads! But, as previously stated, use 460 brass for your light loads! Enjoy! grin memtb

I witnessed 300 XTP Mags fail miserably on up-close shots on a red stag out of a .45 Colt. I too would suggest a different bullet for this purpose.
