Can pick one up reasonable from a client. It's brand new and he quoted me $450 but don't know much about the scope

I would jump all over it at that price. Great glass with the 30mm tube. I have 2 tikkas set up with these exact scopes.

Drummond, I've got that exact same scope on one of my heavy barreled AR's that I use for coyotes, and culling deer & hogs at the Ranch.
It's become my favorite scope of all the Leupolds I own. I'd jump on it for that price!

Drummond,

I've had a 4-12x40 for about a year and a half now, with the WindPlex reticle. Played with it considerably on a hard-kicking rifle at first, and it held up well, with dead-nuts reliable adjustments.

Eventually decided to put it on my 26 Nosler, and also as a test ordered a CDS dial set for average temp/elevation conditions in this part of Montana, with 140-grain AccuBonds using Bryan Litz's ballistic coefficient info. The CDS only takes it to a little over 600 yards, but that's as far as I intend to shoot anyway. The local range has a long-range section with gongs of various sizes scattered all over it, and the rifle will consistently whack 6" gongs out to 600, without any tricks in adjustment like turning the turret beyond the setting and then back again. Instead I just turn it and shoot. I also like the WindPlex reticle, which works fine for wind-holds without a bunch of extraneous clutter.

Dunno how the adjustments would hold up if the turret was twisted 18 zillion times a year, but then I don't usually do that except with the scopes on my rodent-shooting rifles.

Perfect! I don't use the turrets much on my rifles either. I'll pick it up and give it a go

I have had two. Still have one. About the best rifle scope I have ever owned with regard to clarity and resolution. The one I still have started out on a .375H&H. Now on a .300H&H. Have not had any issues with it.

Drummond, I have one on my hard kicking custom smokeless muzzle-loader and it has held up well. I've been very pleased with it.

With all these great comments, I'd be inclined to try one out. I too have been eyeballing a VXR 4-12x40, but with the ballistic fire dot reticle... I'd think the illuminated reticle would be great for dark timber elk hunting... Drummond, good luck with that scope buddy. Maybe you can keep us posted on what you think of it after you use it a bit....

I am pleased with mine. I ordered the free second CDS cap for it. They check the serial number to see if anyone has already used that offer.

I asked for larger MOA numbers with the zero stop feature. (it is just a pin that stops the rotation in both directions at end of full turn)

I have the 50mm Ballistic Firedot 4-12 version on a high-combed varmint-weight 6.5x47L. It's quite bright at dusk and it's overall friendly to my eye. I've noticed I can see well enough to place bullets on silhouetted game with that red dot after I've already lost the ability to see much of the reticle. I think it buys a guy a few more minutes of usefulness near dark.
