Years! Actually, I asked her three times before she finally agreed to marry me. I guess I'm just born to sell.

About a month after she became my girlfriend. Married two months later. That was thirty four years, three kids and ten grand kids ago.

3 years 1st time around. I waited until she finished college. We had 33 great years together before the big C got her. 2 time around it was close to a year.

I knew her for less than a month but I also knew I wanted to be with her for a long time. I was 18 and she was 19 and last July was our 35th anniversary.

I was waiting for a sign from the heavens for the first one. I was young and stupid back then.
By the time the second one came along I was in my early 40's and had come to understand that good pussy and an agreeable disposition was all there was to expect from a woman.
It doesn't take two years to determine good pussy and an agreeable disposition.
6 weeks is plenty.

Hey Bristoe,
Unless you get clipped before you crawl in the sack with her, some strong maternal instincts go well with the attributes you so clearly recognized.
Since I fully expected kids to be in the cards, I found me a woman who mothers every damned critter or kid she comes across.

Since I fully expected kids to be in the cards, I found me a woman who mothers every damned critter or kid she comes across. awwww,...you know,...we're old now. I'm older than her by a bit. But she's a woman. She fixes the bed,..does the dishes,...she's got a herd of cats that run around here,.. I don't ask nothing of her,...she lives here,..I live here,...she's good to me and I try to be good to her. She likes to look at different places. She's traveled a lot in Europe and here and there, but she hasn't got in a car and explored America like I have. We've got a couple of good cars and a little bit of disposable cash,....so occasionally I'll pack up a suitcase and drive us off to some of those old, nice places that I discovered way back when. She seems to like it. I'll drive hard fer 2 days and get her up in the rocky mountains,...tell her,.. "Look at that!" ,...and for a while she doesn't think that I'm just an idiot. I just laugh,....

How long did I wait after what? 57 years ago last September she invited me on a date (Sadie Hawkins type event) and 11 months later we had a wedding. I'm too old to remember what happened when, but somewhere in there she probably told me it was time to ask. Best request I ever made.

About a year and a half, but we lived 350 miles apart so we didn't see a lot of each other at times.
It was some less than a year later when we got married. That was 50 years ago in April of this year.

We were together ten years before she got a phone call from the local Catholic priest to discuss the event...apparently I hadn't bothered to talk to her about it first. No biggie as I am the centre of her universe, her reason for being, the light of her life...and she is in the other room (or I wouldn't be getting tonight's meal). Man they turn mean after they get you where they want you!

Ordinarily I would post a pithy 'ped priest' retort to spice the conversation up, but Father Tinkler did two tours in Vietnam with the Australian Army and is one of the very few Godly people I have ever met, and one heck of a decent fellow. The Catholic church hierarchy sent him away to some troubled area as he was needed there...and if the locals here ever meet any of the [bleep] mick pricks that had a hand in that we will dump them in the local river.

First date I knew I shouldn't let this one slip away. She says with a roll of her eyes "what a romantic" because we were both shooting at the local range when I looked over and ask her "ya wanna get married?" One of the smartest things I ever asked. We'd been together two or three years before I said that.

I'm just playin'. I wasn't, just conversing and enjoying the time off, it is too damn hot outside. I am supposed to be out using an angle grinder and wire brush to clean my 7x5 trailer for painting...but am procrastinating as I really don't like getting burnt to a cinder.

These days I put everything off. I am pretty much at that point now, but this year my daughter is taking a gap-year prior to university so we will be hunting throughout the Victorian highlands through winter, I also want to take my girls up to Longreach in Queensland so that they might meet relatives and see the country. I have been planning for the winter hunting with my lass since 2009, slowly getting the gear together so the trips will be something she will remember favourably for the rest of her life, and hopefully she will do the same with her future family.

I found my current wife in a chat room a long time ago back when the internet was still a novelty.
We were both still young, slim, active folks.
She was up in Boston. I was in Kentucky. I had never been to Boston.
Anyway, I cashed out a 2 week paycheck and headed up to meet her with a wad of money in my pocket,...took her shopping.
She was dressed like a Boston woman,...so I bought her a pair of Daisy Duke denim shorts and a tank top. She looked right after that.
So we had some lobster rolls,...I brought her here,..and we got married.
I knew it was the right thing to do because I lost 10 pounds without trying,..(I was already a skinny lil guy then),...my eyes changed color,..and I had to start shaving twice a day.
I figured "It must be love".
What else will kill you at this age?

Started dating in June, suggested IT in August, married two years later, that was 40 years ago. 48, with the wind-chill.... She and I both say that to folks when they ask 'how long'

I met my wife at a rifle range. We dated for about 9 months before getting engaged, and then about 6 months before we got married, and I've never looked back once. By far the best choice I ever made. I lost a girlfriend to a drunk driver when I was 16, and it took me a long time to get back to dating. Cathy was a a breath of fresh air and truly put the wind back in my sails. I'm a very lucky man.

we dated about 6 months, I proposed to her with the idea we'd get married a year later once our lives settled down
found out she was pregnant the next day.
kinda took the shine off the proposal the night before.
married 1 month later.
got married by a preacher who wanted to do all this pre-marriage counseling horseshit with us. About 10 minutes into the conversation I realized where he was going, told him ...look man, she's gonna have a baby, its past time whether we're compatible or not in the eyes of the church.
He just shut his book and asked me when we planned on having the ceremony.
its all good though. Been married 19 happy years. And the math is easy. All I do is add 1 year to however old my boy is.

I knew immediately she was the one for me, but it took me a little over two years, at age 21, to ask her father, a retired Lt Col. air force Viet Nam veteran, who I greatly love and respect, for her hand in marriage. A taciturn man of outstanding moral and personal character, and me, a college student with very little wisdom at the time…it was a somewhat nervous moment that I can recall like it was yesterday. I remember thanking God after he smiled, hugged me, and said "yes son."
We are going on 31 years, with three outstanding children, ages 19, 23, and 26.
She is by far the best thing in my life. She is beautiful, even tempered, has great social skills, great sense of humor, great maternal instincts, is smarter than me, conservative, Christ-loving and adventurous…she is as close to perfection on earth that I could ever hope to find.

10 years?!,...hail far,...
That's long enough to get tired of a woman.
I think a man needs a new one every 10 years. 13 years.... been married going on 22 now.... Pick the right one and it seems to work.

Somewhat of a love story you could say. We started dating when we were 15, got married at 22. Two beautiful girls 8 and 10. I thank the good lord everyday for what has been given to us.
Are you part of the problem or part of the solution?

5 months. Marriage made it almost 12 yrs. 5 yr break......been back for about 8 yrs. Did not remarry. I'm older and don't give a chit if she stays or goes. But sometimes........I kinda like having her around. Sometimes I wish she'd take her junk and GTFO.

I think if you would put guns and deer before the wife, then its time to get rid of her. IMHO. Sounds like you have other priorities.

Six months of dating. Loved her by then and was happy to be with her all the time. We got married by eloping. There were some difficult times the first ten years or so but we stuck it out. Next year is our 50th Anniversary. I am a lucky guy.

my first response was "not long enough", but there have been more good days than bad, and two children i could not do without, now both grown adults.

26 years ago I was working seasonally for the Forest Service and trapping coyotes in the winter. Etta and I had been dating for two months.
I normally got laid off around the last week of October due to weather in the mountains. We had a late winter so we ended up working longer but I still had to get my traplines out. I was long lining back then and had a lot of ranches to trap and a pretty tight schedule to keep to cover the ground I wanted and catch enough coyotes to make wages.
I was still working days and running traps at night and sleeping very little. Etta went with me one night and I came in with a pile of coyotes about 2330 and got ready to start skinning. She came out to the fur shed and offered to help me skin. I knew already she was the one but that sealed it. I proposed on the spot. In what can only be considered a monumental lapse in judgement, she said yes.
We celebrate 26 years this February.

You've been living with her for 8 years ago IIRC, thats a wife.... if you didn't know it. Sorry to have to tell you. My wife does not validate me....no hunting ground, not big well....still the best thing I ever did was commit to her for life. I'd toss all my hunting and guns for her in an instant. yet I will never have to, she hunts, buys her own guns etc... last purchase was glock 20SF....and a 22 upper for plinking with it, plus found her own holster style for its use.

The bump was plenty evident as she was about 5 mos. pregnant when we got married
It was our 3rd kid
I still love her & she tolerates me

Knew each other informally at college for a couple of years. Ran cross-country together for a season, started dating, engaged in February, married in...umm...I think it was May.
22 years ago, if my math is correct.

Dated for a year before a year of training minimized the time we had together. Kept dating, but I'd only see her once or twice a week. Didn't know where I was going to be sent, and a few of the options were not compatible with her. Thankfully, I got sent somewhere we could both be happy, but didn't know how she was going to like moving away from her college town and the deep social circle she had there. Moved in February, she came out by March, bought a home in early December, asked her to marry me a couple days before Christmas of that year. So all totaled about 3 years of dating. Plus another year and a half before marriage.

Too long the first time; trying to get finances and all sorted out. Second GF, it just came about as a natural fit, and I am pretty sure the better choice overall. 44 years now, no regrets. That is one of those things where a small difference in path leads to a way different finish.

Six weeks. After being married to her for nearly 32 years, I wonder what took me so long.

9 years for me, just to be " engaged" no plan to be married and pay the tax to the state.
I've been married and it was a struggle with an addict. Kinda gave up on that it was a mess.
This time, I've been unable to convince myself of the need for the license. She will always be my girlfriend for life, We have been together long enough to put her on my employees health benefits, and she can also now drive my company vehicle.
We are each others full beneficiaries in all financial and medical requirements, and we each own our own homes. Engagement is likely as far as it will go. However....... the words never and always are often troublesome for me.
Seems like the plan is working and I really do not fully grasp the "marriage" concept when there are no mutually created children involved. Am I to assume that paying the tax to the state gets us anything we don't already share?
Neither of us is ever going to leave the other, However if some kind of catastrophic event occurred, either of us could just walk away with no legal marriage "license" to cause that huge court battle.
As far as "Common Law" well some states may have different ways to manage this. I've watched this play out twice in my life in Washington State with good friends. In neither case was the battle even close to having that marriage license. The couples were sent to mediation to divide up the things they owned mutually, whatever they owned separately remained theirs. Neither man lost any property, or savings, retirement, investments, etc. Actually neither had to even share what he actually had in his personal bank account. With the exception of the joint account that one fella had with his girlfriend.
A third guy that was living with a lady 10 years, but not full time as they both owned homes, had the whole thing thrown out as not relevant to common law. Given my options, I'll choose the common law battle every time over the purchase of the license! Seems to me the court struggles with the concept of common law division of property.
Imagine the simple divide of property. Versus the complicated mess that 35 dollar tax will cause you!
As it is for us, I refer to her as my wife and girlfriend interchangeably. Partner sounds to gay. I must admit those gays really helped with the healthcare and car permission! Our company is politically correct and cannot discriminate against a straight couple now ( us) for health care rights! I was the first one to challenge this when I managed to get her on my benefits.
I have recently started to refer to her as my undocumented wife. That really screws peoples understanding of English up!

When my wife and I started dating we both told each other we would never get married anytime soon. Four months later, we were engaged. Six months later we were married. 25 years later (this July) we are still married. I got the better end of the deal, and she got stuck with my dumb ass.

When I was 19, I started going out with a girl and we dated for 3 years and then got engaged. About a month later, her sister left her husband and moved home. Everything went to hell in a hand basket after that and we broke up. She said she thought she was too young. 6 months later she married some other dude.
About a month later, I met this girl at a Christmas party at my god parents house. Her sister was married to their son. About 6 months after meeting her, I ran into her at a bar and we started dating. We dated for a year before I asked her to marry me. It took her a week to give me an answer. I thought I was done with her until she agreed. That should have been my sign. A year later we got married. The first couple of years were great until we started having kids. The next 10 years were hell. Finally we went to a marriage counselor. After meeting with her twice, the counselor told me she didn't need to see me anymore and had to focus on my wife. She straightened her out and we've been HAPPILY married ever since. 30 years.

At the end of our first date we sat in her driveway and talked about our future together. She was 16, I was 19. Engaged 3 years later and married 2 years after that. We celebrated our 37th anniversary the end of September, she died a month later. Feels like the life's been sucked outa me
