It's always been in the plan to thread the barrel on my CZ 452 American. My question is, for anybody that has done it, what.do you consider the ideal barrel length after threading?

Thanks, Flave. Is that what your 455 is?

I believe my 455 is 16" exactly. But if I was paying a 'smith I'd tell him 16.5 to be safe... grin.

Yeah, Flave. Kinda looking like 16.5-16.75" is right in the CZ sweet spot. Did a bunch of research last night. The stock 452 comes 16", if you choose the threaded option. That is only for RH configuration. There is no LH configuration available with a threaded barrel. Called CZ today. They referred me over to their Custom Shop, which is: Triple River Gunsmithing 619 Commercial St Warsaw, MO 65355 They are a private shop, but apparently do all of CZ's custom work for CZ-USA customers. I had seen their name pop up in a few blurbs online last night when doing research as being good to use. Include letter about what you want to have done to include cap, thread pitch, and any other requests/remarks. They're going to do the chop, thread, recrown for me for $60. My gun is stupid accurate when I do my part. However, the trigger is a really hard pull. They're also going to do a trigger job for me for $50 additional while it's in the shop. Customer pays return shipping. Didn't think that was a bad deal, so mine will be going out to them later this week when I've got some time off. Infomercial over.

Just picked up a box from my FFL/favorite LGS to put the rifle in original box inside to send to TRG (whilst dropping off a couple quarts of homemade split pea soup). Never hurts to feed the tummies of the people who grease the wheel of progress. Figure rifle will travel better that way. Rifle will be going out in the a.m. and will post up some info upon return and testing. Only have a Gemtech GM-22 to can test with when it gets back. 2 Dead Air Mask HD's still in FFL safe waiting on Chairman O's 41P nonsense to clear Form 4 cluster muster. (Don't get me started). Going 18" and 1/2x28" thread pitch with smooth crowned cap and trigger job. 18" just 'cause I like being different. Trigger job if it's not just a couple Yo Dave springs. Update(s) to follow. Merry Christmas and Cheers to all.

Interesting LD. I have a 452 in .17HRM and really like it, but would like to get a second that I could cut down, ceracote, and put a durable synthetic stock on.
Merry Christmas, looking forward to your report.

Yeah, Bob. Funny you mention that because now I've been thinking I'll pick another one up and leave it uncut.

About 5 years ago I had mine cut at 16.75" and threaded. A 452 with a can makes an outstanding squirrel rifle. I use subsonic ammo (my 452 shows a definite preference for win sub power points) and killing several squirrels out of the same tree is easy. I had squirrels for dinner this evening courtesy of my 452. Good hunting with yours.

Thanks, hotsoup. Just talked to Megan yesterday at Triple River. Said they'll be starting on mine tomorrow and will hopefully have it back next week.
So far, am impressed with their communication and quick work. This would take a minimum of multiple weeks at my best local gunnie's shop.
Form 4's for a couple more .22 cans will be getting filed next week. The 41F paperwork with a trust and trustees is a pain.. for now. Hoping Trump deals some influence there.

I did my 22LR, 22Mag, and 17HMR 455 American barrels all at 16.25". These calibers are not going to gain anything of any consequence going any longer and with a can hanging off you will want it as short as possible. That said, 18" will be just fine
You need to call it. I can't call it for you.

Have had a lot of .22 rifles over the years but I can say that the 452 American with the original 17" threaded barrel has been right on top as my favorite. It is very very accurate and not picky as to the ammo fed at all. Since one is adding a can that will be in the area of 6" long, anything over the minimum legal length makes little sense. I did chronograph tests with several different types of ammo and there was little difference between a 17" American and a 21" Varmint...also tested was a 28" Ultra Lux and it was often slower than the other two. 17"/21"/28" Federal Bulk: 1225/1227/1224 Remington Bulk: 1194/1230/1178 CCI Velocitor: 1364/1389/1351 Winchester PowerPoint: 1234/1267/1275 Remington Target: 1109/1093/1116 Winchester Super-X: 1187/1250/1193 CCI SGB: 1262/1272/1248 Remington Viper: 1355/1334/1316 CCI Stinger: 1554/1569/1551 Remington HS HP: 1233/1244/1229 CCI QuickShok: 1567/1556/1685 CCI MiniMag: 1278/1294/1240 Aguila Supermaximum: 1672/1688/1695 Aguila Subsonic: 999/998/970 CCI Subsonic: 1006/1001/967 Each round had a 5 shot group at 50 yards. Noted in my test was that the CCI MM and Aguila Subsonic gave the best groups of the day... This is a target at 50 yards using a Tactical Solutions AXIOM Titanium suppressor and Winchester Super-X ammo. With the suppressor the rounds impact about .5" higher than w/o the suppressor. The bottom right target is 100 yards... Started at the top left with 5 shots with the can and then top right without the can and then adjusted the scope.... As I shot I settled in and the groups got smaller. Great gun....Bob

Was wondering if you had gotten it back and how well the work performed on it turned out.

You all know if the can is pinned to the barrel then the overall length is measured to the end of the can.

Gristle, Marlan called me last week and told me the rifle was done. I could sense him chuckling in the background as I grilled him on what exactly he'd done. He answered every question and assured me it would shoot sweeter than it did, with its new 2 3/4 lb trigger he worked up for me.
My check cleared Friday, so should have it back some time this week.
Will keep you posted.

CZ Custom Shop owner's name is Harlan, not Marlan.
