It's a brush gun. Just like a 7 Mag. Hopefully the next exciting issue will be about venerable cartridges.

What I do know is that a few weeks ago I was up in the TX Panhandle, Todd Hodnett's country, and their #1 choice is still the .308 @ 2600"MV. If barrel life is a non issue, the 300 WM.

220 Swift? He left out that it's a custom like the 6xc if you're going to sling an 80gr Amax.

Talking to you is like trying to nail jello to the wall.

The comments are good. Love the one about "snipers" using the 25'06.

At the beginning of the article I thought this guy is a genius.

I thought I was the only one shooting a 220 swift with a 80gr Amax.

As I went down the list I was confused and disappointed.
How could he leave out the 6.5's?

The 308? seriously? many loads wont even stay supersonic past 800yds.

And no 7mm, really?

The comments were solid gold though.:)

My question is; where are the 6.5's? I keep reading that a number of bencherest shooters have gone to the 6.5x47 Lapua, 6.5x284 and the newer 6.5 Creedmoor. Also, 6.5's have gotten very common at the ranges where I shoot. I'm told that the 6.5 Creedmoor has a trajectory very close to a 300 Win Mag and would be a lot easier on the shoulder to shoot.

The 300 Win mag will do better than 2960 with a 178gr and a 6.5 Creedmoor would do worse than 2820fps.

Try the numbers at 3050fps for the Win mag and 2750fps for the Creed.
That's more realistic

That's Hornady factory numbers. Regardless, you can split a lot of hairs but the point still remains the same.

Old school maybe but I could load a 165 AB to about 3250 or so and arrange it so I get no more than 8-9" of drop ay 400, 25 or so at 500 and 42-48" at 600.

I used to use a 165 NPT and do about as well.

Ive been working with a Creedmoor lately and can't come close to those numbers to 600 yards.

Did they elaborate why they still prefer the 308? I just googled him and read a article where he says he loves the 260 and 300 Norma.

"Drop" is pretty low on my list of concerns.... "Drift" is pretty high on that list.

A 139 at 2750 outta the Creed drifts a couple inches less at 500 than your 165 partition at 3250. Admittedly.... the 165 "drops" about 10" less at that range... and certainly packs more punch with a better game bullet.

Stick a 200-208 in the Win Mag.... and it can best the 6.5s pretty handily... though you certainly pay for it in recoil.
