All: I have a 99EG that has a much darker buttstock than forearm. The gun is around 95% so I believe they are original. Though the years I have seen a number of guns like this. What I noticed is that they are all 50s guns. Also, all the ones I have seen are EGs. Has anyone else noticed this? I am thinking of buying this one. The current owner who owns a number of 99s says that the gun looks correct to him despite the mismatch in color. What does the crowd say? Curious to see if anyone else noticed this. Thanks. http://www.gunbroker.com/item/604353309

Jeff:
I have been watching that gun as well. The wood just came from 2 different trees. No 2 people, no 2 animals, no 2 trees are the same. I don't think that makes them "Mis-matched" IMO.
That gun is real.

Roy: I saw that one too. I took a swing at it early, but I was looking for a deal. Turned out it went for about fair market value IMO. No way I'm paying that!

Fireball, the one you mentioned is headed to Georgia. I am still looking for a 30-30 but there was this empty space under my Christmas tree.

I'd ask for better pictures, maybe outside, were I interested.

I had an EG in 308 (...obviously from the 50's),that had very different color butt stock from the forearm. It went to a very experienced member here who confirmed it was all correct.
Walnut is an over-harvested wood, the only hardwood with it's own grading system, (lower standards than all other hardwoods). Quality of lumber dropped off rapidly with the explosion of mass-produced furniture after WWII. I suspect these mis-matched stock colors are the product of fewer choices in the lumber stack during the 50's.

It's just wood and the slight difference in color does not deter its quality in any way. If you want the gun buy it and be happy that you can swing the price. Not everyone can. Best of luck in your decision.

Does seem to be mostly 50's guns. 1950's 99EG in 358, assembly codes match:
“ The Savage 99 Pocket Reference”. All models and variations of 1895’s, 1899’s and 99’s covered. Also dates, checkering, engraving.. Find at www.savagelevers.com

Anybody have other makes guns from the 50s to compare with? Walnuts are an agricultural crop with a lifespan. It could be that in the 1950s it just got hard finding enough mature trees for making good stocks. It seems to me that the military experienced problems in procuring good walnut in WWII. And who knows, there may have been a lot of replanting going on that caused shortages of black walnut in the 40s and 50s.

Just a quick scan of Remington 721/2 wood will convince you that nice walnut was saved for premium stocks.

Would never be able to get past the color differences.... Normally I'd avoid them... but an EG in 358 made me break down and give in.

Frankly I wouldn't worry about it. It is what it is and it is original. And it doesn't get any better than that!
