Good evening gentleman. I have a model 99 that i have some questions about. It has a k stamped on lever and serial number starts with 273. Ive been told they werent made in stainless but this one appears that way. Its been in my dads safe since 1977.

I would say that is an aftermarket finish

Looks like someone chromed an early 20s take down. There are those on this forum who would call that sareligious and others who would say "cool." Since it's already done then I'd say just roll with it and have some fun. What's the caliber?

You have a neat set-up there, great rifle, great caliber. It's obviously been re-finished, but it looks like they did a good job.

It's hard for me to tell from your pictures what the true finish color is on the metal, and what's just reflection from your lighting.

Any chance you could take a closer picture of the metal finish, with some known factory-finished rifle next to it for comparison?

Gold trigger says refinish from sometime after 1960 to me, since they had gold triggers on some models after 1960. Chromed or nickel plated with some sanding to the stock, not a bad looking job overall. And in 250-3000, heck of a hunting rifle or range gun.

Awfully hard to say from the existing pics, but to my eye it kinda looks like someone gave it an electroless nickel finish. Not altogether ugly, I rather like it- as a novelty.

Long ago I was gifted a late 60's M94 Winchester, with the rust pitting in the steel receiver that was common with those things. I draw filed the pits out, polished the whole works, bead blasted everything, and had the receiver, barrel, and magazine tube electroless nickel finish- kind of a gray matte finish with luster. (I was at a loss as to how to permanently stop the insidious rusting that was endemic to M94's of that era, and this was how I chose to do it.) I then blued everything else- lever, screws, bolt, trigger, loading gate, etc. to provide areas of contrast, and re-finished the wood. It was an exercise of whimsy and it turned out rather pretty. I finally took a ridiculous offer from among many I was given for it, so away it went.

It would be good if the finish was done in hard chrome. I don't know how to distinguish the presence of hard chrome other than it being tougher than nails - much tougher. We used to hard chrome the connecting journals on tractor crankshafts as an alternative to replacing them with factory new units. That's how tough hard chrome is.

The gold trigger doesn't even work with a 273??? serial number sear does it? or anything with the takedown forearm.

You are quite right on that.

Reminds me of a .250 EG I bought years ago that had a chromed lever on it and a plated trigger that looked gold colored. Traded the lever with one of the old G&K forum members - Frank Fox as I recall.

Looks just like my 99H, but plated. I'll bet that would be a slick rifle to carry.
