OP RAS Campfire Outfitter Joined: Dec 2005 Posts: 12,989 In the woods...	All: I have a 99EG that has a much darker buttstock than forearm. The gun is around 95% so I believe they are original. Though the years I have seen a number of guns like this. What I noticed is that they are all 50s guns. Also, all the ones I have seen are EGs. Has anyone else noticed this? I am thinking of buying this one. The current owner who owns a number of 99s says that the gun looks correct to him despite the mismatch in color. What does the crowd say? Curious to see if anyone else noticed this. I don't think that makes them "Mis-matched" IMO. That gun is real. "You cannot invade mainland America. Digital cameras can do some weird things. I'd ask for better pictures, maybe outside, were I interested. Last edited by gregintenn; 12/08/16.

JeffG Campfire Tracker J Joined: Jul 2008 Posts: 6,571 upstate NY	I had an EG in 308 (...obviously from the 50's),that had very different color butt stock from the forearm. It went to a very experienced member here who confirmed it was all correct. Walnut is an over-harvested wood, the only hardwood with it's own grading system, (lower standards than all other hardwoods). Quality of lumber dropped off rapidly with the explosion of mass-produced furniture after WWII. I suspect these mis-matched stock colors are the product of fewer choices in the lumber stack during the 50's. Last edited by JeffG; 12/08/16. If you want the gun buy it and be happy that you can swing the price. Not everyone can. Best of luck in your decision. It could be that in the 1950s it just got hard finding enough mature trees for making good stocks. It seems to me that the military experienced problems in procuring good walnut in WWII. And who knows, there may have been a lot of replanting going on that caused shortages of black walnut in the 40s and 50s. Last edited by S99VG; 12/09/16.
