You have a VERY smart wife................... smile smile smile Money well spent. If I were you, I'd also attempt purchasing the Doug Murray book.

No, the receiver of my rifle is not drilled or tapped. About a year ago I had a chance to purchase a 99 250 in similar condition but it had been drilled and tapped and had a weaver scope. This was not factory tapped, the model 99 stamp on top of the receiver was covered, which I thought should decrease value of the gun. But the price was $1450 firm. I'm glad I was patient and got mine for several hundred less.

By the way, what year did Savage start to factory drill/tap the rifles? I know, it's probably in the book 😀

They started D&T'ing the EG's at 750xxx range. Also a group in the 725xxx to 735xxx range and a few scattered earlier ones.

It's a good thing you didn't buy that D&T'd 250. I don't buy Bubbaed rifles now that I know better. The D&T probably made it worth about half the asking price.
The catalogs didn't carry the 99R until about 1950. I think they were produced earlier. I have one made in 1950 that is factory D&T'd. It's the earliest post WWII 99R I've seen but it is possible that they were produced earlier and were D&T'd. The 99F was introduced about late 1954/early 1955 and was D&T'd. This is probably when factory D&T'd EG's started appearing. Incidentally there are a few EG's that have the Savage 99 marking on the left side of the receiver that are not factory D&T'd. Go figure. The 99F 358 I got back in the mid 60's was factory D&T.

I wanted a scope on it as we hunted bucks in Vt where a 3" antler was required. You could see them easier behind the ear with a scope. I used a Lyman 4X then.
