I have done a lot of western hunting, with various cartridges. What has worked for me is:
reasonable diameter, hunting quality projectile, BC .41-.46
2800-2900 fps muzzle velocity
good accuracy, preferably better than 1 moa in hunting relevant situations
decent scope with high end power 6x or more.

Specific selections have gone from .270 win to various .338s. All did just fine for me, generally from 300-500 yards. The biggest factor for me was not which cartridge, or rifle weight, but my own experience and practice at using it well.

At one time I had a model 70 SS 300 wsm and a model 70 SS 300 rum. The weight differance between the two was very slight. Slight to the point one was no more easier to carry than the other. I woukd guess 6 Oz or so.
Still have the model 70 300 rum, bit sold the wsm.

I never got that far....bought it on a Saturday morning, mounted a scope and bought two boxes of factory. Went to the range and played with it....Holy Shidt the thing was stupid!.

It blasted rocks 10 feet high from 300 yards; every shot was a grim lesson in hanging on tighter....

Did another session on Sunday.

I took it back to the store Sunday afternoon, grabbed a store credit and sucked up the loss and figured I was still ahead of the game. smile

I bought a Montana 300 wsm for the sole reason to shoot 168gr E Tips and 200gr ELDX bullets. Very good set up that I'd hunt anything anywhere with in NA.

Yup, the RUMs sure look good on paper though.

I could. SPS has them now, which is the only way I purchase nosler products. The reason for the etips is that they were cheap compared to anything else, and they shoot really well out of my 3006. An etip at 3150 should be easy and if it shoots well, doesn't leave much to be desired.
