I know of a rifle so described that I believe I can acquire for about $1500. It appears to be original and in very nice condition, about 90% in my estimation. What do you guys think?

Photos would help, if it is original and a true 90% the money is about right... You never pay to much for a nice pre 64 mod 70, you may buy a little to soon! LOL very best WinPoor

Pics would be helpful, but not a bad deal if in original condition (gun should not have a pad)....

$1500 price might be slightly high, IMO. For a 90% rifle that's all original, market value is probably in the $1100-$1300 range.

This year I have purchased six 300 H&H rifles. A 1952 Sporter in in 98% condition for $1300. The other 5 all had cut or custom stocks and I paid less than $900 for each of them.

People are typically asking a $1500-$2000 for .300 H&H rifles on GB, but those rifles aren't selling. looking back though the past 90 days of actual sales, I only found 3 rifles which sold on GB. None is an exact match to an unmodified Sporter with 90% finish, but they give you some idea of the prices the market will bear right now for a .300 H&H.

A cut Sporter for $900 - http://www.gunbroker.com/item/588523242

A badly modified sporter for $695 - http://www.gunbroker.com/item/591348993

Exactly. If it's all original at least... The thing that concerns me is, we've had guys ask the same questions, saying the gun is "all original" as far as they can tell. They post pictures and sure enough, it's been monkeyed with... One of the first things I'd look at is the butt plate. Is it steel? When exactly in the "50" was this rifle manufactured???? There's a lot of questions the enquiring minds want to know.... wink

Yep, pictures not coming through on my end. Photobucket has been a real biotch for me lately. I think it's my ad blocker. But then again, without ad block I can't use this site... I'd love to see pics of the rifle though..

Keeping in mind this guy is a gun buyer/shop owner. Market value is around $2,100.00 for a true 90% condition rifle. One thing I almost live by is something a friend of mine used to drill into my head about his gundealer friend: That was "If he can't steal them, he's not buying them".... True words, true chit. I've done the gunshow buying bit, I've even had tables set up at gunshows. I've seen just the magnum receivers sell for $1,100.00. These were complete receivers with bolt, trigger and bottom metal. We also don't want to get into a discussion about what I've bought and the prices I've paid for some pre 64 items. That doesn't mean that's "market value" either.... Hint.. wink

Gun looks very nice to me (it's missing front sight hood). I'd try for a little better price, but would definetly like to own it....

If the photos Im seeing are the 300 H&H , it looks honest and 85-87 %, WERE I selling the gun, rig, I too would want 1400-1500 skins. I have been buying, trading, shooting, collecting these things for a long while, I feel the market has softened a bit SAVE the 95% + guns, they do not seem to weeble, wobble very much . my 2 C, the very best new year to all WinPoor

I can't argue with you, BSA, about what I am willing to pay for rifles for my business. I pay wholesale prices, otherwise I lose money on the business. That being said, the actual GB sales I posted do reflect market value. Speaking of which, $1250 for any Super Grade is probably money well spent! I wish I had spotted that one going through!

I also agree that where a rifle is sold can make a huge difference in what it sells for. A rifle selling at RIA will go for more than the same rifle at Gunsamerica.com. Appraised value on guns leans toward an auction sale like RIA, even though the auction house is going to get 15%-20% of that value. Gunshow prices can't tell us much, as they are all over the map - everything from bargain basement prices to wishful thinking.

Looking at the photos of the "90%" rifle, I do think it looks pretty good. $1500 as a retail price may not be too far off.

So if you walk into the local gun shop and there is a 85% bull rifle in 300 magnum priced at 1540?

If it's original, it is worth several times that amount. What year?

Pre 64 check your PM's
Buy the Bull, I have a story on a Bull gun I haggled over a few hundred bucks, it was in 300 WinMag ( late 50's early 60's gun), not 300 H&H. Little did I know way back then (prob late 80's, Prob Randy Shuman ) very ,very few BULLS were mfg in 300 win mag ! 2 or 300 bucks would not have made squat in the big scheme of things now! the very best WinPoor

The .300 H&H was supposedly made in 1956.

It's in the years of production which are most sought after. I don't think you'd regret paying $1500 for it.
