My friends, as we enter the new year, we need to remind ourselves to stay vigilant. This poor Turk was rescued via an online auction at the insistence of a family member.



When this poor abandoned wretch was unboxed we were pleasantly surprised at the amount of work that was already done. It appears the action has been trued up and the barrel set back. It is missing the inner workings of the bolt, but that is something we here at the MRS are equipped to deal with. We will need to acquire an 8x57 reamer and proper gauges as we will need to bring it back into usable condition.(With the barrel set back we suspected that the headspace would be too short, this was confirmed when the bolt would not close on a case resized to minimum spec, if it would have closed we would still have rechecked with proper gauges before shooting it.)

We here at the MRS will continue to update the progress of this case as it develops.

Well progress has been made my friends, As you can see the missing striker and safety have been replaced. Also added a Dayton Mk.II trigger and gave it a thorough degreasing. I will update again, when further progress demands.

Are you going to replace the stock and add a scope or iron sights to it CowboyTim?

Will keep the Bell and Carlson as my brother in law likes it(his rifle after all), will be refinished a flat olive. Rifle is drilled for Leupold 1 pc mount so that is what I'll use. Have a 2014 model Russian 4x(mildot) with a steel body that I've had on a couple rifles, he likes it, told him he could have it(it's actually a pretty nice scope, way better than the older Russian 4x's). I will Aluma-Hyde the scope to match the rifle.

The problem with the stock isn't the stock. The action was bedded into the stock and the job looks great EXCEPT...



MAYBE they should have put some bedding around the recoil lug...I mean I would, so...



I removed some bedding surrounding the lug area and drilled some hole for the bedding to fill for some extra grab. Had some Pro-Bed in the safe so I rebedded the lug. Good or bad I'll post pics of the result tomorrow.

and the stock is refinished...



Now just have to wait for the reamer and Aluma Hyde to get here from Brownells...project is coming along anyway.

Looks 10X better already.

Well my friends, this afternoon we here at the MRS received a welcome shipment from our good friends at Brownells. The Manson reamer and gauges brought the old Turk back into spec in just a few short minutes. We then proceeded to, once again, thoroughly clean and degrease the rifle. We then placed it into our "hot box" with a can of Dark Park Grey Aluma Hyde and will let it warm until tomorrow at which time we will open the box long enough to apply the finish and then seal it back up for 2 weeks or so to cure. Picture of the completed project will be posted at that time.

I'm liking this color. Aluma-Hyde Dark Park Grey...

We'll see how it looks when its cured, just sealed up the box.

Well got it all assembled, need to wait for higher scope rings before I mount an optic and get final results on this rescue project.



Upon completion of this rescue the final results with before and after pics will be posted to the MRS thread. We at the MRS will continue to move forward with this and future Mauser rescues.

One Mauser at a time!

I'd like to become a Society member too, so I've added a couple Mauser books to my library. There's a LOT to learn.

The local pickin's are slim, but as my awareness goes up, I'm sure my opportunities will too.

We at the MRS have found, that many times Mauser 98's are left neglected on used racks in areas where AR's are popular(the fools). Often if you can look past the tacky on some of them, you can find GOOD actions already drilled and tapped with aftermarket triggers installed for less than the price of the parts. There is really no trick to it, it's just knowing which variants interest you, being observant and remaining patient.

I followed that rifle's progress, and also really like the one on in the McSwirly.

Ultimately I'd like to try my hand at building a rig in pretty walnut. But the utility grade Mausers have a great no nonsense look to 'em too.

BTW, have you also started a Classic Country Kitchen Society also? I DIG that door and baseboard.

Haven't shot it yet, I'm just going to bore sight and test fire at 50 yards or so. Brother in law's rifle, just getting it up and running for him.
