The Hunter's Book of The Elk by John Barsness. He posts here as Muledeer. I would PM him and hope for an autographed copygrin.

Look at Big Fin's post on this thread and enjoy.

The Elk of North America by Olaus Murie

This is not a hunting book. It's written by the most knowledgeable scientist on the subject of elk. He was the senior scientist at the National Elk Refuge in Jackson Hole for ten years. There's no guesswork in his book. It is all backed up by scientific research.

It was out of print for a long time but I see that it's available again.

All About Elk by Lapinsky / Schuh / Van Zwoll / Wiltse ISBN 0-914697-07-2
Elk Essentials by Bob Robb ISBN 1-58150-034-2
In preparation for a Colorado elk hunt this fall I read a whole bunch of elk books. These 2 were the best and covered all the bases.
My brother found a copy of the book by Murie that KC recommended at a garage sale for a couple bucks. Great drawings of tracks, anatomy, dung, etc. as well as being the last word on the behavior and characteristics of the elk.

Just a few I have that are pretty good reads:

1. Elk Tactics by Don Laubach and Mark Henckel.
2. Elk rifles, cartridges and hunting tactics by Wayne Van Zwoll...
3. Elk hunters bible by Jim Zumbo

You guys just cost me $20 - Thanks! reading about elk is better than sitting here watching it snow..........

BTW: the book KC posted is cheaper on Abe Books than Amazon - I paid $10 shipped for the hard cover 1979 version. In fact, I bought All About Elk book from their too - it was $4.95 shipped.

I usually look at Abe books for unusual titles.

I didn't know the book existed - thanks!

I'm convinced that the ones here can read the regulations. They seem to be experts on season dates and land boundaries.
