Went to visit my brother and family over the New Years weekend and stopped at a Cabelas on the way for a pit stop and leg stretch. Took a cruse through their gun library but saw nothing that caught my fancy for the prices they wanted. On the way home today, nature started calling near the exit for the same Cabelas store so I pulled in to answer "the call". Another cruse through the library, and my eyes came to rest on the distinctive pistol grip of a Model 64. As I scanned upwards, the barrel ended unexpectedly. A carbine! Salesman says just came in this morning. A quick check of the price tag (below the going rate) and overall condition..........it's comin' home with me! A 1941 .30 WCF that, while showing 75+ years of existence, doesn't appear to have been carried or fired much. After a terrible autumn of 2016, I'm hoping it's a harbinger of better times ahead. Happy New Year!

Try loading yourself up some cast or Speer Plinkers and shoot that thing.

I'd say your year is off to a fine start, carbines don't come along too often especially in that nice condition. Congratulations, do enjoy that great vintage Winchester lever gun in 2017.

I've always had an affinity for the 64, especially the carbines. Both my father and his younger brother had them in carbine trim and killed literally tons of deer with them from the late '30s into the '90s. Don't know how many of the carbines were made but it seems I see 10 rifles for every carbine and they command a premium. I was very surprised to find this one on Cabelas rack and priced well below what they sell for on the auction sites. I don't think it was listed on their website yet. While this one isn't a pristine example..... receiver has flaked to a dark grey, a few spots of surface rust on the buttplate, barrel and sight hood, the stock has bumps and scratches....... it's original and unmodified with little wear associated with carrying or shooting. Wish a 71 carbine would fall into my lap in the same fashion! Those are usually well above my pay scale though.

Tmitch: I have owned probably 20+ Winchester Model 64's and 71's - all have been Rifles (both Deluxe's and Standards!).
Never owned a Carbine of either Model, they indeed are rare - good for you.
Good start and have a good year.

Now to find a vintage Lyman 56a to fit it. My fathers M64 is fitted with a "Climbing Lyman" 21 but, even if I could find one, I don't think I could bring myself to D&T it.
