It's been below freezing for about 24 hrs and I figured it would be a good time to take a walk and look for pigs. My son and I headed into the bottom and walked about a mile before we saw any good sign there were pigs in the area. After we saw the fresh rooting, we started easing thru the bottom and it wasn't long before we saw them and my son managed to shoot this one. I saw the pigs, but didn't get a shot. She weighed about 60-70 lbs. and should be some good eating.

Oldman: Good deal. I, too, like that rifle. I enjoy shooting hogs just as much as I enjoy deer hunting. Keep it up.

That rifle belongs to my son. His granddad bought the rifle new and when my son was about 6-8 yrs. old, he asked PePaw for it. Before his granddad passed away, he gave it to him. It's a B78 in 6mm.

I think a lot of the pigs down South, or Southwest anyway, are descended from ones that escaped from the early Spanish explorers, who brought their bacon on the hoof. Gotta think those pigs didn't look much like our modern farm porkers. No doubt there's been additions to the gene pool from other sources as well, of course.

We have a small population of real wild boar here in WV, brought in years ago by the G&F folks, but they are slowly dying out due to causes not entirely understood by the experts. Rather than try to save them, the DNR continues to sell tags. Hope the elk stocking works out better.

It's a damn good thing that those bastids aren't running loose here in North Dakota. I'd never find the time to get my arse to work if they were....

Idaho has only 1 very small herd of them. The IDFG would love to have hunters wipe them out but they hang out in heavy brush where it's very difficult to find them. It's in the middle of millions of acres of desert where they're very unlikely to spread. They were obviously planted there deliberately years ago.

Great job, never seen one two tone like that one. Most of ours are white with black spots or black with white spots.
Most are solid black though

That reminds me of the old trapper went down to the valley town with no women to sell pelts at rondiveaux . After a few shots The barkeep showed him the sows out back and after several rounds of whiskey and initial unbelief the trapper acquesed and chose what he thought was a "cute" one. The barkeep laughed regarding his initial reluctance and told him he had picked the ugliest hog in the bunch. wink

They are all red, all white, all black, and any combo of the three colors in Texas. You get extra points for spotted pigs.
