A local smith told me it would be $500 to convert a 300 SAUM to a 300 WSM. Can't help but believe this can be done far cheaper,(ie, not pulling barrel).

Would love to hear from those who have done this.

thanks

Both cases are made off the 404 Jeffrey case with the WSM having the larger case capacity so rechambering the barrel is all that's needed I believe to go from the 300 SAUM case to the 300 WSM case.

That should come in well below a half $k unless he's including the cost of the reamer and some other goodies.

Edit:I haven't done it though.

Magazine length would be an issue and maybe feeding as well.

Why would you want to do it?

I like the Seven saum but tired of the high price/low availability of ammo. I know, reloading would be the answer assuming brass is on hand but I've heard of this being done by just reaming. If that's a few hundred or more than its not worth it to me.
Considered re-barrel since a new wsm barrel is cheap but still smith work would probably be a deal breaker.

I don't doubt in the end it may make more sense to just sell it and move on.

Lots of WSM barrels floating around on Ebay and else where just put up a WTB ad if this is a Rem 700 action.

I would think on the order of $175 would be about right. Nothing else gets swapped. You have a bit of mill time to re scribe barrel etc.
500 would be for new barrel.

I wouldn't do it, either. I love the shamu cartridges. Brass can be found if you look hard enough and aren't in a hurry. Reloading is a must!!

If it's a model 7, I can see it getting expensive.
