I catch them incidentally while fishing for walleye and lake trout in the winter. I have filleted several and thought they were pretty good table fare fried up in beer batter, or boiled in 7up and dipped in salted butter…poor man's lobster.

We catch them. If conditions are right (weather) so permitting that I can clean them right away out on the ice, then sometimes I will clean one or 2.

I've done the whole boil and dip in butter thing, it's ok but I prefer to bread and deep fry.

also called eelpout

A friend told me his brother caught one once, and threw his rod out of the boat when he saw it!

They are not pretty.

I get them OUT of the ice house pretty quick if we are keeping, otherwise I don't even let them out of the fishing hole. I get my hook out and push them snaky bastards down the hole with the back of my gaff pole.

Then the fish hole is all nasty, filthy pig fish.

They taste as good as they look ugly.

They are the only freshwater cod... and one of only two freshwater fish really worth eating, IMO...

Haven't caught one, yet. I'm sure I'd like it.

I do like the saltwater ling cod, even if it isn't a cod.

You've either never eaten walleye, perch, or crappie bass, or else you have different taste buds than I do.

Gotta throw in with Art here.....growing up in MN, we smoked most lake trout as they just didn't compare with walleyes or pan fish.....but these lake trout up here are great eating.

I try to spend most of a month each summer just fishing lake trout......fried for dinner nightly.....in a comal pozo.
