I posted over on cowboy action shooting forum, pretty slow there. Any of you guys familiar with Winchester 55 rifles. I am wanting to shoot the Cowboy lever action highpower silhouette, but the 99's aren't legal. looking at a 30-30 mod 55 in decent shape to use. any input is good, durability, parts issues, or if I should just buy something newer. this one is 1926 ish made, been refinished, reblued and color case redone, drilled receiver already. collector value low I believe.
Thanks,
Jeff

My understanding is the the M55 is a variant of the M94 that was introduced to bridge the gap between the M94 Sporting Rifle and M94 carbine. The M55 was produced in limited numbers for approx 8 years (20's and 30's) Believe that at some point of M55 production it shared the same serial # range with the M94. Should be no issues if your M55 is in decent, working condition....

I used to shoot in SASS matches and a M55 would be fine to shoot. You are at a disadvantage as it will only hold 4 or 5 rounds. Most are 10 round matches. All are timed.

Never owned one but have a variety of other lever action Winchesters to include 64, 94 and 71. Maybe someday one will come along and join the stable. I am beginning to appreciate the 30-30 more and more now that I am living in MI again. It is all you need here for 90% of the rifle deer hunting I do.

For SASS main match rifles are pistol caliber only. This is where speed counted for a great deal. The 94's, 55"s, etc. were only for long range and there is plenty of time to reload. The club I shot with near Morro Bay had a modern category so they could shoot their 1895 Mausers. I used my Savage 1895 round barrel in that category. David

Yeah....I got that impression. I doubt it's open to the [public, however.
