Can a Ruger #1 be rebarreled to 17 Hornet? If so any suggestions for a shop that can do it? I have thousands of sage rats to kill and would rather use a small cased 17ca centerfire than my 22lr.

Sure. Any smith that is willing to work on No. 1's can do it. Factory extractors are available, solving one hurdle.

yes, I have one done in 17 Ackley hornet which I had done over 25 years ago. as kp321 said the 22 hornet extractor is still available from ruger or numrich. it is then just a matter of getting the barrel installed.

You bet. One of the beauties of the No.1 is its flexiblity as to caliber.

I might suggest thinking about the twist rate of the new barrel, for years the 10 twist was it for 17's in general. Lately some of the newer longer tipped 25gr bullets for the 17 really like a 9 twist. Of course if going to the heavier(30gr++) 17 bullets, more twist is required. If had a choice of twist for my shooting requirements in the 17, I would choose the 9 twist and not look back.

My 17 bumble bee in a No.1 has a 10 twist Shilen, it does ok with the older Hornady and Remington bullets that I have around; today I would up the twist to 9 for the newer, longer tipped bullets like the Vmax.

Thanks all. The rifle is boxed and will be shipped to PAC-NOR tomorrow, it will get a 24" 1:9 barrel with the factory contour. I dug around in my old parts drawers and found a VaraXII 4x12 scope for it. Sage rats will die.

I do not need the extra velocity and have been wanting a 17 Hornet for years. For my needs it will work well. If I need more I have several 223/5.56 rifles, a 243 and a 243WSSM.
