What bullets are you using for a 22-250 with a 1 in 14 twist? I have some Speer 45gr bullets ordered but would like to see what works for others.

I've had/have a half dozen 22-250s around but none in 1:14 at this time. I've shot 55 SMK aplenty and some 60 NPs. That's about as heavy as I've been able to shoot in those rifles.

Dave,

I have several rifles in that chambering...

but the one in 14 twist ones... my favorite bullet is the Hornady 60 grain SP....

the 63SMP Sierra is another good one, along with their 60 grain HP...

at 3600 fps, the two 60 grainers are pretty flat shooting rounds...and very accurate in a couple of high mileage barrels...

Dave, I have one .22-250, a couple Swifts and a .22-250 AI.. All are 1-14,, Anything I need done with a .22-250 the 1-14 will do it..
It will shoot 70 gr. Speers, 64 gr. WW, 63 gr. Sierra.. Right now my favorite bullets are the 50 gr. Vmax or Blitzking.. The shoot super fast and kill coyotes even deer well.. But If I am deer hunting, I usually take a bigger rifle..

I wore out a .22-250 barrel shooting nothing but Sierra 55 gr. HPBT's.. I still like that bullet very much.. But I think the new plastic tipped bullets are easier to get to shoot well.. Just my Idea..

Most of my powders are old stand by's.. H4895 is my favorite, but lately I have been shooting I3031 because I got 10 pounds for $11/#..

Enjoy, I went the fast twist route once.. If I every buy any more .22-250 barrels I might got to a 1-12.. Otherwise just shoot it and enjoy it..

I have a R700 with the same 1:14 twist. 55 grain plastic tipped bullets are a no-go resulting in shotgun patterns and keyholes. 55 gr lead tipped bullets work very well as do 50 gr Vmax, BKings, and Btips. For powders I have had great results with Re15, IMR 4064, and Varget.

My go to load for many years in the 220 Swift with 1&14 twist was the Hornady 53 gr Match BTHP with 38 gr's of IMR4064. My present 22-250 Ack with 1&14 twist is the Hornady 50 gr V-Max with Varget

63 grain Sierra SMP. I've killed several coyotes with it, and between my daughter and myself we killed four deer last year with it. No complaints from me.

I start with 50s with a 1-14" twist. Even if the gun will stabilize a little heavier bullet, this is where I've found accuracy most often. That's with .22-250 or .220 Swift.

I had one bad .22-250 that would ONLY shoot well with the 35 grain VMAX Hornet bullet. Ignore that one, something was wrong there. The other two .22-250s did very well with the Hornady 50 grain SX pushed to max velocity, and one of them did equally well with the Speer 50 grain TNT. My first Swift liked the 50 grain Ballistic Tip.

So .. that's where I'd start, 50s.

Don't hesitate to go heavier or lighter. 55s should be good, usually are. 60s might or might not be. Boat tails, less likely, flat base, more likely, soft point, more likely, hollowpoint, less likely. It's really about bullet length, not weight.

Above 60 grains, the stubbier semi-spitzers may still stabilize even if long, streamlined bullets won't. 63 grain Sierra semi-spitzer often will. Winchester 64 grain power point often will. Speer 70 grain semi-spitzer often will. But the 60 grain Nosler partition very seldom does. Like I said, it's about length, not weight.

Thanks for the input. I loaded some Speer 45gr flat based bullets with 37gr of IMR4064 for my Weatherby Varmint Master and some Nosler 55gr Varmegedon tipped bullets with 38.5gr of CFE223. I seated the bullets out but not into the lands.

Went to the range today. The 45gr Speers shot patterns with both 22-250w. The 55gr Nosler Varmegedon tipped bullets shot good in both rifles. I got a 1/2" 6 shot group when I did my part with the Weatherby. I have to hold down on the scope to steady it when I shoot it. The original owner of both 22-250s had a great load for the Ruger #1. A Sierra 55gr spritzer boat tail with IMR 4064. I loaded some with 38gr of CFE223 and it shot great too. I'd post a pic but Photobucket won't load pictures for me.
