Here's my Model 83 44 mag I picked up used awhile back. All I can say is that it's very accurate way out there, and the grip frame fits me much better then the Model 97 grip frame. The 44 Mag is a relative pussy cat in this gun and for me, easier to shoot than my N frames with the same loads. If I was going to change anything, I would flute the cylinder and put micarta grips on it. a few months ago I was bidding on a similar model 83 on GB. 4 5/8s barrel. went for like 1700. I quit bidding at 1600. Next time I see a 4 5/8s field grade it's going to come home with me.

Couldn't take it anymore! Freedumb1 used to have a beautiful SS 629 5" Classic pre-lock and I always drooled over that gun. He sold it to a friend MANY years ago and I've kicked myself for not buying it ever since. Well....after suffering through this thread I jumped over to GB and did a search and low and behold - found the exact gun (still NIB) that I've always wanted to own. Pulled the trigger on the "Buy it Now" and probably paid too much so I could finally scratch that itch. Sometimes you just have to get these kinds of gun-owning mistakes out of your system!!

Nice revolver. I bought the 6" version a few months ago. I should have held out for a 5".

I'd recommend it. The 44 mag is really nice to shoot in this weight revolver. Having shot a few 454's in my past, I don't really care for the recoil.

I had one with a slightly longer barrel. Traded it off, but it was one of the best shooting 44 Mags I've owned. Had an old boy offer me one at a gunshow for $550, IIRC and I tried to get it for $500 but didn't. Should have ponied up. That must've been five years ago now.

I remember how nice the trigger was on that S&W compared to my Ruger GP-100 and have high hopes that this 629 will be a good shooter because I'd love to use it for deer down the road....

I know of a 629-1 6" that has sat in a pawn shop for a few months now.

I know of a 629-1 6" that has sat in a pawn shop for a few months now. Buy it. My 6" M629 no dash P&R'd is the finest factory assembled N-Frame of many that I own or have owned. Herrett's stocks, my standard replacement for my shooter N-Frames just work for me. The tightest factory Smith I have ever owned.

Mannlicher and I stopped in there yesterday, Ed. It was finally sold.
Sam did find a 6" 29-2 that had been roughed up a bit that he made a bid on. Needs rear sight and some TLC. Would be a nice shooter after.

A new .44 owner PM'd me about this thread, and I figured I would stick this pic in here. 185 grain wadcutters (shown with my heavy 305 grain loads), pushed by 10 grains of Unique. Easy shooting and quite accurate. Also the topic of crimp came up again, and this is not the greatest pic of the crimp, but it gives some indication of the amount applied (with a Lee crimp die).

Hey I resemble that incineration! I blame all-you-all 44 Magnum shooters on this thread! Thanks a lot - really!

I got out to the desert for a bit yesterday. It was an awful, muddy, slushy mess. In fact it had literally taken out the entire highway, south of me a ways. While I was mainly using my AR for Jacks, a few stood still a bit too long, within handgun ranges. The 4" 29 spoke, and the wadcutters did their job. The wadcutters are loads of fun with the Jacks. Light recoil, and they just plain SMACK the rabbits.

[/URL] Ruger Super Blackhawk, I prefer the single action. They have a rolling recoil vs. the snap of a double action.
