Looking to continue reintroducing native prairie grasses on my 5 acres. Thinking I may just till up a quarter acre or so a year for the next few years and replant as I go. Any recommendations for a tiller to use with my Kubota? Size, brand, etc.
Will eventually use it for just a large garden so should have an ongoing need for it.

actually looking for one too....local TSC carries 'Countryline'
my other local choice would be 'King Kutter'
my Kioti tractor is a CK35...so I'm looking at a 60" tiller
TSC quoted me $1535 out the door...my use would be game food plots
a new 1 acre lawn area.....garden..etc...gonna do my research
before I plunk down $1500.......for sure
just match the width/PTO HP up to the tiller

Mine is only a 21 hp 4wd Kubota. Thinking a 48" width for mine.

Consider a burn down with glyphosate before you till. You want to kill roots. Not chop them u and sread them.

I have the 6' rotary tiller from TSC. I use my 45hp tractor with it. It's a beast! I put in a few food plots for clients and myself each year, and it does an outstanding job. here's one of the bigger plots. This one was dry this year with black gumbo type soil that was extremely hard. The tiller never hiccuped. Knock the growth down with Glyphosate before tilling, and you'll have better results. Mine is only a 21 hp 4wd Kubota. Thinking a 48" width for mine. Make sure the minimum HP for the tiller doesn't exceed your PTO HP rating of your tractor. You won't like it, if it does. Another thing to consider is the width of your tractor and the width of your tiller. If your tractor width exceeds the width of the tiller, then you are leaving tracks outside the tilled path. Wouldn't consider anything but a gear driven tiller. There are chain driven tillers out there. Gears are better.

I bought a King Kutter 4 foot tiller from TSC a number of years ago. Used it with a 22 HP JD sub-compact. I used mine strictly for working up the garden, but I've since quit using it as much. If I were working up ground that already had vegetation on it, I'd first burn it off with Roundup. Also, as far as the size goes, you should be fine with a 4 foot model. With a 21 HP tractor, I wouldn't want anything bigger. Those tillers can put a load on a tractor in certain soil conditions.

Thanks for the info guys. Used a little glyphosate last year and figures it would make sense to kill what is there before tilling. I'll do that for sure.
Sounds like a 48" is about perfect for the 21 hp. Thinking if I can time the tilling for when the soil has a little moisture in it that my results might be better. Come summer this sandy clay dirt gets pretty hard.

I want a tiller also but man they are pricey when you get to the 72" tillers.

If you are sewing native grass you don't need a tiller for sure , most common mistake made is covering too deep,if you have some cover at all just glyphos it wait till dead, spread seed and harrow. Used to do all the reconst work for Mo d w if seed is covered over 1/16 inch will never come up!!!!!

Only reason I was thinking of tilling was I have a number of areas with construction compaction that I think need to be broken up. Did about an acre of native prairie seed last year and despite the drought, using an arena drag was all I needed. Still thinking tilling after glyphosate is the way to go to prepare the bed. Then seed and then roll the hell out of it.

Actually roll it first, if it is real loose you will roll it too deep after seeding!!

Makes sense. Too deep is for sure not good on this seed.
