I'm taking my son and his friiend on a Newfoundland hunt in 2018. They pay half and I'll take care of the balance. We have been researching various outfitters and will probably attend the Springfield Massachusetts spoertsman show as well. Weather in February seems to interfere with Harrisburg, but we will see. Any recommendations would be appreciated. we have looked at Coones river, Crabbe River , Effords and Rays so far.

Three of us are booked with Moose Valley Outfitters for September 2018. I've contacted about 30 references and all of them have had positive things to say, even once that didn't score. Many of them said they were repeat customers. Not sure if he is booked up but give Dean a call. He is a great guy to talk to. Good luck in your search. http://www.moosevalley.com/

Yes, West Woods Outfitters. Check them out - google them. My son and I have return hunts, planning another.
Sent you a PM.
I have no formal nor informal relationship with them. Had great hunts there. Planning another.

Jim Agreed. Great outfit and we had a really enjoyable hunt in 15. I believe they are sold out in 18 but I am looking to go back to Newfoundland in 18 myself. I'll be searching for that at Harrisburg.

Another happy West Woods Outfitters customer. I went up in 2014 and had a great time. Stewart and Grace and their staff were all wonderful people. I would recommend booking at least 2 years in advance to get a time you prefer.

Consider choosing an outfitter far from population centers. There are no private lands in Newfoundland. Difficult access and distance tends towards less pressure. My first trip was at Frozen Ocean Lake, near Grand Falls, during the opening week. Guide had to go to 5 different "secret" spots before we found woods without hunters already on the ground. Still like everything else about NF.
Imagine your grave on a windy winter night. You've been dead for 70 years. It's been 50 since a visitor last paused at your tombstone..... Now explain why you're in a pissy mood today.

Moose Valley Outfitters, Westwoods, Crabbe's River, Connes, Ray's and a few others have had positive feedback.
I have emailed or spoke to at least 4 hunters that went with Westwoods, one local fellow that is a clients brother in law.
Fishdog52's comment about being away from the population centers makes sense as well.
Last thing we want is to be bumping into other hunters.

We have made multiple trips with Red Indian Lake Outfitters. Very happy with them.

A friend and I went in 2001 and used Hinterland Outfitting Ltd. We were very happy with the guides and the facilities and the area is remote. We (4 hunters in camp) had 100% success. http://www.newfoundlandbiggamehunting.com/

Another recommendation for Red Indian Lake Outfitters. Great bunch of hard working people. Hunted with them in November '16 and already thinking of going back this year.

There are many factors to consider when travelling to NFLD to hunt. I've been there twice working. One thing is that it is a very large island and it's not a bad thing to find a good outfitter close to Port aux Basques where the ferry lands. A 12 hr drive from the ferry adds a lot of travel time to your hunt.
The last time I went over I returned on the ferry in a gale in the middle of January. The boat was empty as all the roads were closed and none of the truckers made the sailing. That was quite a trip.

Westwood, Moose valley, Newfound outfitters are nearly sold out for 2018. From my experience, this will be true for the better outfitters

My son booked with Connes River Outfitters and yup an 8 hour drive to the lodge from the ferry! I told him we will leave on a Thursday, arrive Friday morning an make the pilgrimage on Friday and Saturday morning.
Good thing they are young.
